Suzanne Somers Biography

Suzanne Marie Mahoney was born in San Bruno, California, on 16 October 1946; she is one of four children. In 1986, she wrote an autobiography entitled Keeping Secrets, in which detailed the physical abuse she suffered at the hands of her father as a child, which was later made into a TV movie.

As a child she was diagnosed as having dyslexia and was considered a poor academic student. She did, however, perform well in the theater program at the school, eventually, attending college with a music scholarship.

Unfortunately, after a short time at college, she became pregnant and married her boyfriend Bruce Somers, the marriage ended in 1967 after two years. As a single mother trying to make ends meet Suzanne used her looks to take up modeling, she was quickly snapped up by a game show hosted by Alan Hamel, who later became her second husband.

During the early 70s, she found minor roles in TV shows and movies. Eventually, winning the role that would make her a star, as the bubbly blond Chrissy on the hit TV comedy show Three's Company opposite John Ritter. She has stated in the past that the character was based on the wife of famous entertainer, Dick Clark.

She starred in the show for four seasons, then was apparently 'let go' after asking for a raise. During the early 80s she performed on stage in Las Vegas. She later took the role of Carol Foster, this time, playing opposite Patrick Duffy in the TV series Step by Step. She later went on to host the long-running Candid Camera.

At the beginning of the 90s, he became famous as the scantily clad Thigh Master workout girl in a series of well remembered commercials for the leg exerciser.

Since then, she has gone to more serious work, founding the Suzanne Somers Institute for the Effects of Addictions on the Family. She also, she appeared before the U.S. Senate Committee who at the time were planning legislation regarding addiction and family abuse.

She went on to give lectures on the subject, all over the United States. In addition, was given a Humanitarian Award from the National Counsel on Alcoholism, she is also won the prestigious President's Award from the National Association of American Drug Counselors. As well as several other commendations for her work.

Here are some interesting facts about Suzanne's life, she reached cult status, playing the mysterious blonde driving a Thunderbird, and being pursued by Richard Dreyfuss in the 1972 cult phenomena American Graffiti.

Because of her dyslexia, she had to paint one shoe red to be able to learn dance numbers for her Vegas show. After originally winning the role of Jill Munroe in "Charlie's Angels", she was replaced before shooting began, by Farrah Fawcett.

After losing the role, she hired, Farrah's manager to do for her what he had done a Farrah. In 2001 while being interviewed on the hit show Larry King Live, she announced that she was suffering from breast cancer.

In the opening credits for "Three's Company", the brunette walking along the beach is Suzanne wearing a wig. In 1986, she became Las Vegas, female entertainer of the year.

She and Joyce DeWitt did not speak for 20 years after the end of Three's Company. She was not the first actors hired play Chrissy; she was in fact, the fourth, women, given the role.

Suzann currently promotes her own line of diet and other products with her husband Alan Hamel.

Ageless-Diva.com provides a full range of official Suzanne Somers products, such as the FaceMaster, the ThighMaster, SomerSweet and Spray On MakeUp.

Marion Meadows "Next To You" Smooth Jazz Music CD Review

Marion Meadows, the richly talented Smooth Jazz artist has released his latest album titled Next To You and Wow! Its really a good one.

I wish it werent the case but, its not everyday that I get a CD from an artist that I can just pop in and comfortably listen to from beginning to end. There is usually a song or two that I just cant force myself to get through. Not at all the case with Next To You. Every track is enjoyable and was pretty easy for me to listen to from start to finish.

The nice thing about a CD like this is when the talent is this rich even if Smooth Jazz isnt your favorite style you still cant help but appreciate the greatness of the artist.

Overall Next To You is excellent from beginning to end. One of those CDs that after a few listens the songs are just etched into your memory. A must have for the Smooth Jazz fan. Really sensational from beginning to end.

My SmoothLee Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in "Stuck On REpeat"] is track 10, It's Alright Now. Good stuff!

Miss Peru And Miss Universe 1957: 50th Anniversary

On July 19, 1957, Miss Peru, Gladys Zender Urbina, was elected Miss Universe 1957. Site: Long Beach, California (USA).She was the first Latin American woman to win the Miss Universe. Gladys Zender studied art and languages, and at one point she wanted to be an aviator. During her early teenage years, her beauty and personality drew positive comments especially when she won the Reinado de Primavera (Spring Pageant) in her Santa Ursula school, and years later, the Reinado de los Carnavales (Carnival Pageant) of Miraflores. Before being crowned Miss Peru 1957, the representative of Max Factor company, Roman Toporow, while visiting Lima, was impressed by the style and the very Latin features of the young Gladys and affirmed that she was a perfect beauty. In the beginning, her family was opposed to her joining the national pageant, but later they supported her by traveling with her to Long Beach.

During the sixth edition of the Miss Universe pageant, there were all sorts surprises. It was rumoured that the pageant preferred candidates from countries that were experiencing political crisis. However,Miss Greece, Lygia Karavias, did not qualified for the semi-finals. Experts predicted that two favourites Misses Germany and England- would win and keep the crown in Western Europe. Miss Germany, Gerti Daud, was crowned Miss Photogenic Universe.

Some observers believed that the delegates from Brazil (Teresinha Goncalves Morango), Argentina(Monica Lamas), Peru(Gladys Zender), Canada (Gloria Noakes), Italy (Valeria Fabrizzi) and Martinica (Ginette Cidalise-Montaise) would enter the finals. Many of the girls from Latin America thought that they had been invited for the sake of formality only.

There was some sort of uneasiness in the region since two Latin beauties had failed to win in two consecutive finals. In 1954, the Brazilian Maria Martha Marilu Hacker Rocha was adjudged as very beautiful, but her hips were two inches wider than the ideal measurement and thus lost to the American Miriam Stevenson.

In 1955, the huge favourite Miss El Salvador who resembled Marilyn Monroe- lost by two points to Hillevi Rombin of Sweden.

Gladys Zender's victory in Miss Universe pageant had taken the Peruvian and the rest of Latin America by surprise.According to the American press, the traits that made Gladys deserve the title were these: her captivating personality and her aristocratic bearing and that she had been educated in the traditional system of Latin American women In the end, it was her whistlebait figure that won her the crown and beat the beauties from Brazil, England, Cuba and Germany.

During her homecoming on August 10, 1957, a million of her compatriots lined up along the streets to welcome her. When Gladys appeared, the crowd never tired of shouting, Viva Gladys!. I cried with joy. I never imagined this welcome, remarked the beauty queen during an interview.
In 1982 when the Miss Universe pageant was held in Lima, the Miss Universe Organization presented Gladys with a special trophy to honor her 25th coronation anniversary.
Today, Gladys Zender de Meir is a Latin beauty iconan example of Miss Universe.

Chinese New Year Spectacular Showcases the Fashion of Ancient China

The NTDTV Chinese New Year Spectacular has entered its fourth season. Its theme of Myths and Legends weaves a tale of the proverbial battle between good and evil through theatre, music and dance.

The Spectacular has drawn a lot of attention in recent years for its theatrical costumes and themes revolving around ancient times; inspiring and impressing audiences of all ages with its natural style and bright presentation. Each characters appearance is vividly portrayed and expressed through their costume.

Modern design has a theory for every detail, including color balancing and dynamics. Ancient people did not have such theories. Beauty and virtue were the general principles of their designs. As long as it looks comfortable and harmonious then it is acceptable. The design group for the NTDTV Spectacular applied modern esthetics to recover and recreate the history. They further emphasized the balancing of harmony and contrast based on beauty.

These costumes were designed strictly according to the records in ancient books and paintings to re-display the Chinese traditional clothing and culture as accurately as possible to the audience. One reference was The History of Chinese Clothing. The book was compiled from the research of archaeological findings by a group of senior scholars of Shanghai Universities and Colleges.

A more direct source of blueprints was the frescoes in the Dunhuang cave, a treasure house of Chinese culture. All the way from the Southern and Northern Dynasties to the Tang Dynasty, paintings were added in each historical period and much of the clothing found on the characters was representative of the typical clothing in each time period. Besides Dunhuang, the designs were also referenced from sculptures, the jade carvings and household utensils from ancient times.

In the period just before the Tang Dynasty, peoples lives were very turbulent, most notably due to the wars during the Southern and Northern Dynasties. This is expressed through the flowers on the clothing, which looked relatively rough.

During the Tang Dynasty, the economy was good and society was stable. The flowers on the clothing were full, magnificent, and serene; the decorative patterns exuded elegance. Garments with big sleeves were most common during the Tang Dynasty. The outer garments were transparent, and the inner garments carried a low neckline. The hairstyles were varied; a womans hair could drag along the ground if not combed. The Tang Dynastys poetry and literature were full of imagination and the Chinese people were also very broadminded. Their clothing reflected this by being very open and broad. The clothing also absorbed elements from other cultures through frequent contact with the regions in the west, India and other Asian countries; Persian designs were also very popular.

Ancient clothing was not limited to only a few styles for each period. The big sleeves, for example, changed both in detail and color from the golden age of the Tang to the late Tang. The design must take into account the specific point in history. The size of the sleeve is also designed according to the era, with base colors designed from the most original findings.

The linings of the costumes were mostly from China in order to make things authentic, as one could tell with a glance that it was a foreign product if linings from other countries were used. The designers for the Spectacular are presenting the beauty of the Chinese traditional culture found within the Chinese traditional clothing.

The costume designers follow a principle: to make something responsible for and representative of society while respecting legitimate culture instead of something to stimulate the senses. Therefore, the designs must be in accordance with what is recorded from history. Musician's Guide To Band Agreements

Band agreements.

If you write songs within a band, you need to plan for the day when you will be earning royalties from your songs, and be clear what will happen if a member of the band leaves or if the band splits up.
The best way to deal with this is to all agree what is fair, and then put this in writing as a formal agreement which you all sign. This way there is little chance of any comeback if the band splits for less than amicable reasons.

Here are a few specific points you should consider:

  1. If a member of the band leaves, do they forfeit all rights to the songs, and the songs remain the sole property of the band?

  2. Are the songs written by one person, or a few principal writers, who wish to retain all rights?

  3. If a band member leaves would both he and the band both retain a claim to the song, (this is probably the most likely option).

  4. How do you determine each persons share?

Do you base it on a song by song basis ranking each members input, or use the same formula for every song.

Do you simply divide everything up equally, (i.e. 5 members each own 20% of all the songs and therefore receives 20% of the proceeds/royalties), or do you rank each individuals input?

  5. If a member leaves, can he/she perform or profit from the music outside of the band.

Sample band contracts can be viewed and downloaded from the following sites:
http://undercurrents.com/agreements/agreement-bandmember.html,
http://www.blues101.org/articles/promotion1.htm and
http://www.musicianassist.com/archive/contract/files/member.htm

The advice from the UK Copyright Service on this subject is:

Where music is written as a group effort, we recommend that you draw up an agreement to clarify issues, such as which rights belong to which member, and how royalties would be distributed in the event that members of your group leave.

For successful commercial bands, incorporation is also an option. As with a normal incorporated company, the band members would own shares in the band/company. In this situation, a band member would typically sell his shares to the other members if he decided to leave.

It's Jewish Music, But Is The Music Jewish?

A while back I was driving along the Jerusalem highway scanning the radio stations. On one frequency, a very intense dance beat was exploding out of the speakers. I was about to move the dial some more in search of a Jewish tune when the vocalist started in. Shock of shocks, he was a heavily Hassidic singer, complete with eastern European pronunciation. And what was he singing? "Kumee oy'ree ki va oy-reich.." from 16th century Rabbi Shlomo Alkavetz' classic Sabbath poem, L'cha Dodi. Before he had began his rendition I had been expecting something like "Oh baby, the way you move with me ..."!

I had to ask the old question, "Is this good for the Jews?" And I had to give the old answer, "Does hair grow on the palm of your hand?"

Of course it's not good for the Jews, I felt. Poor, unfortunate L'cha Dodi, dragged from the fields of Tsfat on the Sabbath eve and infected with Saturday Night Fever! Lovingly done by a Hassid, no less!

Speaking of Tsfat, I recall meandering about their Klezmer festival once and hearing a contemporary setting of Psalm 126. It was to a funk rhythm, and the words did not fit. The singer had to split words in two, which rendered them more or less meaningless. Good for the Jews? Nah.

What bothered me about this so-called Jewish music? To put it briefly, besides the words, it just wasn't. It was dance, trance, shmantz. It was hip, driving, suggestive. If this music was asked where it wanted to play, the synagogue or the sin-skin club, the answer was clear. If Jewish music is to be defined as such, it must have authentic Jewish roots. And so much contemporary music simply does not. Where was the source of this tradition? Nowhere. That's what bothered me.

But, as Tevye reminds us, there's another hand. After all, go listen to classic Hassidic nigunim (melodies). Then go listen to Russian folk songs. Eerie, no? Weren't those folk songs the "dance" of their day?

Even stronger, go watch the religious kids. They love contemporary popular music and all its villains. What these new Jewish groups do is take what's hip and put Jewish content into it. Isn't that what the original Hassidic nigunim were all about? If we don't want to lose our young people in the culture war, we have to compete. Didn't Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch bring the choral works of Lewandowsky and Japhet in to the synagogue service, even though they were completely in the style of the German composers of the age, such as Schubert and Mendelssohn (he needs an asterisk because he was halakhically Jewish)? So maybe I should not only calm down, I should applaud this phenomenon.

Hold on. We're both right, I believe. Here's how I reconcile the difference, and my earnest appeal to all who create Jewish music. The most important thing is to ask, "To be or not to be?" That is the question.

Every song has a purpose, a message. It can be joy, faith, pensiveness, determination, anything. The message is in the melody and rhythm, which create the atmosphere. It's in the text, which gives articulation to the message. And it's in the performance, which makes the message personal between the performer and the listener. If the message is congruent, if the music and the lyrics are a perfect union that inspires the performer, then you have a great piece of music. If the message is mixed, if there's a battle going on between the rhythm and the words, then we are troubled. That was why that "kumee oy'ree" was so absolutely awful. It was a mixed message of licentious music with holy texts.

We love to set verses from the liturgy to music, and that's wonderful. Composers have a special responsibility to make sure that the music conveys the message and colors the words with deeper meanings. Do that, and I'm fascinated, I'm inspired, even if it's a contemporary style.

But be very, very careful with verses. We tend to ask, "Do you think Adon Olam goes to this?", when we would do better to ask, "What is this melody saying?". If it says Adon Olam, good. If it does not, then WRITE YOUR OWN WORDS. To keep with the idea of message, if you have a great tune that can say something worthwhile (something human and real, not negative or immodest), say it your way. That satisfies.

The foundation of Jewish music has always been expressing what's in our hearts as a prayer to God. That expression must be congruent, pure, sincere. There is room in the Jewish music world for great innovation, if it comes from our hearts, not from the charts.

Stage Fright

Can you remember the first time you ever saw belly dancing? Oh, I can and with my six year old eyes and mind I knew that this dance would definitely change my life forever. It took me awhile but by my early twenties I was starting on my path towards becoming a belly dancer. As a newcomer, belly dancing took over my days, nights and dreams. Than the day came when it was time to show my community what I had learned. That day was the first encounter I had with a very unusual and interesting foe. There are many of you reading this that will never forget your first performance. And I know there are many of you who can never forget your first encounter with "Stage Fright".

Stage Fright is very clever. It sneaks up on you just before you get on stage or you may wake up on the morning of your performance feeling like you shouldn't get out of bed. It is amazing how Stage Fright affects the body. My bladder turns into the size of a pea but only for that night. My heart is either trying to jump out of my throat or drop to my knees. Than my palms get sweaty and I feel like I need to take a nap all at the same time. And let's not forget the occasional break out. I can remember I was dancing for an anniversary party at a restaurant I use to perform at. I woke up the morning of the performance with this huge bump in the middle of my forehead. It wasn't there the day before and I took extra measures to make sure my skin was clear. You guessed it; Stage Fright had something to do with it. So what did I do? All I can say is thank God for bindis!

Stage Fright overloads the brain with images that really aren't there. The stage can either become larger or smaller depending on what false images Stage Fright creates in your brain. And the number one false image is the unfriendly audience. I have left the stage thinking the audience didn't like me only to find out afterwards that I was well received. I've experienced performances where I was ahead of my music. Did Stage Fright convince my music to slow down on me? Your guess is as good as mine. I know that Stage Fright has convinced my props to act up during past performances. And Stage Fright has convinced my memory to leave and not to come back until I finished my performance. Stage fright will whisper in your ear that the entire theater is watching you and that the audience knows you just messed up your choreography. And there have been a few times when I went deaf and didn't hear the audience applause at all. Actually I should say my hearing and memory went out the window together. And the one way to know if a dancer is experiencing Stage Fright is to see the look on her face that resembles a "deer caught in the headlights". If you see this look, do your best to support her and let her know she's doing a great.

So here are a few tips my friends and I came up with to help dancers overcome such a calculating adversary:

    1. Laugh with friends and think of whatever makes you happy.
There is no failure in performing because if you don't go out on stage, you will never know what it feels like to be in front of an audience. People will always appreciate your efforts!
    2. Have family and friends in the front row to cheer you on. My Dad makes funny faces and he always makes me laugh.
    3. Know your music like the back of your hand. Even if you forget your choreography the music will be very familiar to you.
    4. Go over your choreography the morning of your performance and try to keep it fresh in your mind. I will usually listen to my music on the drive to wherever I am performing. It helps jazz me up and sometimes I'll come up with some interesting moves in my head. (Be careful of the belly dancer pedal to the metal groove!)
    5. Remember to practice your performance with your costume on. I have danced with a skirt that could fit a whole circus in it. 6. Remember to look in the mirror just before you go on stage and smile at the beautiful dancer looking back at you. (Plus it doesn't hurt to check to see if lipstick is on your teeth!)
    7. The stage really is our friend. Know the length and width of any space you are performing at.
    8. When we perform together we are part of an amazing team so know you have support and back up on the side lines. You are not alone!!
    9. A good meditation or prayer will always put a heart or soul at ease. Group prayer can really give you the boost you need and send Stage Fright running!
    10. Last but not least is Stage Frights final illusion which is the expectation of standing ovations and a movie deal your first time performing. Granted not all of you may have fallen for this but there was a part of me that saw stars, literally and figuratively.

If Stage Fright does creep in every once in awhile just remember to laugh. Some of the best memories I have with performing are my goofiest moments. And when I'm in my rocking chair remembering my dance career I want to be smiling from ear to ear (even if I have no teeth).

Blessings,

Leyla Naj

How To Play The Keyboard - Start With C Major

Playing the keyboard is not as difficult as a lot of piano upstarts think. In fact, the piano is the perfect instrument for music beginners, as, unlike other instruments, its layout is straightforward and easy to understand. Plus, in contrast to instruments like the guitar, to play the keyboard doesn't require a lot of unnatural hand contortions -- at least until you get to more advanced pieces, but by then your fingers will be buff.

When learning how to play the keyboard, the basics are quite simple. Looking at the piano, there are two types of keys -- white keys and black keys. As you may already know, the musical scale consists of the letters A through G with some sharps/flats mixed in. The first important fact to learn is that the white keys represent the letters, while the black keys represent the sharps and flats.

Before going any further, you must find your piano's middle C. You will find it in the middle of the keyboard. Most pianos have the name of the company that made them printed above the keyboard. In many cases, the first letter of the name is directly above middle C. If you still can't find the middle C, consult a diagram.

When starting out, you might as well tell yourself that you're not going to touch the black keys for the first few lessons. For now, focus on the white keys, which make up the C major scale.

To play this scale, place your thumb on the middle C, with the rest of your fingers on the next four successive notes -- D, E, F, and G. Essentially, you're going to play eight notes, beginning with middle C, and ending with the C that is one octave higher.

When you play these eight notes in order, you'll notice that it sounds quite familiar. Even though you may not know it, the C major scale is something that you've probably heard hundreds of times in your life, from various sources. If you do it correctly, to play your first scale should feel pretty satisfying. This is partly because the major scale is designed to musically resolve itself in a nice way.

Piano teachers have specific ways that they recommend playing scales. My teacher, for instance, taught me the standard way of playing the C major scale upwards, which was to play the first three notes with my first three fingers, then cross my thumb under and play the rest of the scale with all five fingers. Whether or not you use this particular method is up to you; the important thing is that you find natural ways to play the scales. As your ways of playing will soon be internalized, you want to find the best ways to play the keyboard.

Once you become good at playing the C major scale with your right hand -- both up and down -- it's time to learn the same thing with your left hand. Essentially, the C major scale with your left hand is the mirror image of the one you've already learned; place your thumb on the middle C, and play all the white keys down to the next C, then go back up.

After you learn how to play the C major scale, it's time to learn chords. Soon after that, it will be time to learn some other scales. For now, though, practice the C major scale as many times as it takes to sound smooth and even. It may be boring, but once you get this down, everything else in the future will be a little easier.

Basically, when learning how to play the keyboard, mastering the piano's C major scale is the bridge toward bigger and more ambitious things. So, practice that scale until you can play it in your sleep.

Duane Shinn is the author of the popular DVD home study course on playing piano titled Crash Course In Exciting Piano Playing!

A Step-by-Step Guide to Cuban Salsa

Dance has been an important part of rituals, celebrations and entertainment since before the birth of human civilisation. In the beginning, before we had written language to record things, the purpose of dance was often to tell stories and to pass them down to future generations.

The story of dancing in Cuba

In Cuba, as in ancient times, dance tells its own story. The passion and energy of Cuban dance reveals the strength and conviction of the Cuban people, determined to enjoy life despite 'la lucha' (the struggle) of living in a strictly regulated country where the average monthly wage comes in at around 400 pesos - less than 10.

The richness of Cuban music and dancing also tells the story of Cuba's melting pot of cultures. From the high-stepping flamenco brought by the Spanish settlers in the 15th century to the frenzied tribal dances of the West African slaves, dancing is in the blood of the Cuban people.

From the teenage girl in denim shorts to the cigar-seller on the street corner, Cubans are given to break into spontaneous dance steps. Furthermore, the people dancing on the streets of Havana are likely to be just as good as the professionals, because in Cuba dancing is simply a way of life.

The variety of Cuban dances

Cuba boasts a huge range of dances including classical ballet, contemporary, flamenco and folk dancing. But it is the partnered routines that appeared in Havana dancehalls between the 1920s and the 1950s - Salsa, rumba, mambo and cha-cha-cha - that can be seen in every Cuban bar, club and street. Of these, Salsa is the most popular dance internationally.

Since the name 'Salsa' (it's Spanish for 'sauce') was coined, Salsa dancing has exploded in popularity in Latin America and across the world. Salsa dancing classes are now hugely popular but to really get into the swing of it a Salsa holiday in Cuba itself is a must.

Tips for Cuban Salsa dancing

If you do take yourself on a Cuban holiday, you'll have the unique experience of watching Cubans Salsa dancing. It sometimes appears that by some genetic aberration they have been born with super flexible joints, defying physics to carry out all the complex manoeuvres they have integrated into the dancing. Their remarkable twisting body movements and natural sense of rhythm will dazzle you.

If you have the right technique, Cuban Salsa is easier to learn than many other forms of dance. The basic footwork is a fairly simple walking motion, pausing every fourth beat, and there are some six basic steps you can follow to make sure you're on the right tracks.

1 Relax

To dance Cuban Salsa well it is important not to rush, but to relax into the steps. Movements should be precise and deliberate in addition to being flowing and smooth.

2 Walk with purpose

Salsa dancing involves a continual circular motion. Couples walk around each other with an imaginary axis between them. This makes turns look smooth and effortless. Walking gives time to untangle your arms after each turn.

3 Have confidence in your lead

The leader (usually the man) should have constant tension in his arms, while his hands guide his Salsa dancing partner around the floor. There is no need to clamp onto each other's hands, only to use the right amount of tension to provide a leading signal.

4 Be flexible when following

In order to follow well, ladies should try to match the tension of their partner. The exception to this is when arms need to be relaxed and flexible to complete arm-twisting Salsa moves without injury!

5 Keep balanced when you spin

The key to all the spectacular spins in Salsa is not to lose your balance. One way to do it is by spotting while you spin - focussing on one spot at each turn - an age-old dance technique.

6 Use your body

In Salsa dancing, ladies should make use of their body and be sensual, playful and creative. This can involve some creative arm movements, going with what feels right and basically showing off a bit. Enjoy!

With offices in Havana and the UK, Captivating Cuba can offer Cuban Salsa holidays to Havana as well as expert advice on holidays to Varadero and Cayo Coco and lesser known resorts such as Jibacoa and Trinidad.

Radio Play - Will Topping The Charts Make You Bigger Than Elvis?

Every true life rock n roll television melodrama has the same scene: the unknown artist/band gives their freshly cut 45rpm single to the local disc jockey. He spins it on his top 40 radio showand a star is born. This legend has been passed down through the generations of wannabe popstars like an ancient family recipe. The ingredients may differ, but in the end you get the same glorious results: radio play equals fame and fortune.

But does this Top of the Charts fairytale still apply today in the sardonic post new millennium world we call today? Can a band in our current music scene walk into a radio station with a CD single in their hot little hands, impress and wow the DJ with their enthusiasm and chutzpa, obtain the magic and golden FM radio spins and then ride the wave of success all the way to Graceland? Well, then, I guess the real question would be, Do you believe in fairytales?

Unfortunately, the music industry, like the entire Earth, has become so overpopulated and so oversaturated with artists, music, CDs, and radio stations/shows of all kinds, that the chance of your own personal radio fairytale coming true is probably slim to none. But, dont give up on your favorite audio media outlet. Radio may not catapult you to instant superstardom but it certainly can help to push you down the path to success.

The following are a few tips that will help you to make your own music fairytale and get your music heard throughout the airwaves:

1.) Get Out Of Major Market The Top 40 Station Mentality---There was a day when getting played on a big city Top 40 radio station was like winning a gold medal at the Olympics. Bands that were chosen for play were handpicked by the voices of the airwaves whose ears were finely tuned to pick out the next new rising star. Today, things are a little different. Radio has become a huge corporation with three major conglomerates owning most of the stations in the United States. Sadly, Disc jockeys are no longer the innovators their predecessors were. Station management hands down a playlist (made exclusively of artists signed to mostly major labels) and the voices you hear on your radio are just thattalking heads animating a script. Its nearly impossible for an unknown band to break into mainstream large metropolis radio and a waste of your time and money to send packages blindly to a medium that will more than likely reject you again and again.

2.) The Specialty Show Is Your Ticket In---Still determined to get played on that hot radio station with 10 million listeners and a celebrity DJ? Well, there is a backdoor that you may be able to slip through. Its the specialty show. Many huge stations feature a weekly show structured just to highlight the little guyto showcase unsigned artists from that stations area and sometimes beyond. These shows are always worth sending your press package to, as they tend to base their playlist on your music and your credentials on not on the typical corporate artist roster. This is where you just might wow that innovative disc jockey and garner play on some of Americas biggest stations.

3.) College Radio Still Rocks---One area of radio that has stayed unaffected by the huge corporate retooling is the college/university station. Unlike companies/labels deciding what the listening audience thinks is cool or hip, college radio DJs and program directors are still setting their own cutting edges, breaking new artists, and finding the hot fresh stars of tomorrow hiding in their local clubs, coffee houses and garages. Its always beneficial for unsigned artists to send as many CDs (or email as many MP3s, if the station will accept that medium) to as many college stations as you can find. You will find stations to play you and people will be listening. This could lead to new fans, tour possibilities, and will definitely look fantastic on the radio page of your website or EPK. Whether or not it will actually make you a rockstar, it will sure make you feel like one.

4.) The Unlimited World Of Independent Radio---Back in the early days of radio, indie stations were limited to audio pirates in their basements stealing airwaves from unsuspecting Top 40 giants. Now, thanks to the internet, satellites, cell phones, iPods and cable TV, independent stations outnumber their AM/FM constituents in the thousands and new ones are created every day. Since doing a search of indie radio stations online has been known to cause a brain embolism in some, know that you will probably never be able to solicit them all in one lifetime and just relax and enjoy sending music to whomever you can, as you will probably garner hoards of airplay. Furthermore, your wallet will grow to love you as most of these stations will allow you to submit MP3s online.

Its true that the legendary story of the unknown band that got one single played on the radio and became superstars within a month is probably as outdated as the 8-Track tape. But that doesnt mean that the process of artists soliciting music for radio play has become archaic. Radio remains, to this day, one of the best ways for musicians to promote their music and their projects in their area.and now, thanks to terrific technological advancements, nationally and worldwide. The repetition of your single in the ears of even the most jaded radio listener, may lead to: CD and merchandise sales, gigging opportunities in your city and others, visits to your website, posts to your fan club forums, potential press and even maybe industry attention. So, dont stop sending those CDs, and emailing those MP3s because the next person who hears your song on the radio might just be the one who leads, either directly or indirectly, to your much sought record deal. And who knows? You might just wind up becoming bigger than Elvis.

A Guide To Ballet

Ballet is a dance that beautifies our movements and builds gracefulness into our body and limbs. Transcending centuries, ballet has a long history. With roots in the Renaissance court spectacle in Italy, ballet has taken its form from the French ballet de cour.

Enchanting and graceful with unbelievable steps, ballet is an extremely difficult dance to be learnt perfectly. Great determination, undying spirit, hard work, unbounded practice, and pain are required to master the steps and make a graceful and superb dancer.

To enable dancers to perform perfectly, there are special shoes available - simply called ballet shoes or ballet slippers - made out of leather, satin, or canvas which makes ballet steps and movements possible without causing any injuries to the dancer.

Research shows that some brands are particularly known for making good ballet shoes of different types, materials, and designs. Angelo Luzio, Freed, Gamba, Grishko, Leo, Patterson, Sansha, Art Stone, Bloch, Capezio, and Danshuz are some brands among others which specialize in ballet shoes or slippers.

Ballet slippers are always preferred to be snug but not tight, and to have enough room for the toes to spread out comfortably. Good ballet shoes also have ribbons and elastics to allow for flexibility and feet comfort. Options exist as to the type of sole pattern desired - split or full sole.

Multitudes of ballet schools exist which have brilliant teachers imparting ballet lessons to people of all ages. Apart from the normal ballet lessons, there are even summer intensive courses and some special courses to children of aged 3 or 4 years. Such courses help to tune in their movements to music. However, most professional courses begin at the age of 9 years.

American Repertory Ballets Princeton Ballet School, School of American Ballet, the San Francisco Ballet School, and Canadas Royal Winnipeg Ballet are some schools which impart professional ballet dancing lessons.

Some talented and famous dancers include Anna Pavlova, Vaslav Nijinsky, Alicia Alonso, Briely Movric, Paloma Herrera, and Mikhail Baryshnikov, besides many, many others.

An expressive dance form, ballet continues today in its ever-growing popularity, stealing hearts of millions of people all over the world.

What You Need To Know About DJs

Today, people have an option today to select from numerous entertainment options in their spare time. For those who simply love dancing, options are no longer limited to family weddings or proms. Dancing to the beat of hip-hop, trance and R&B are sure ways to reduce stress levels after a long days work. While in the last decade, the options for dance music was limited to just a cassette on play mode, today, disc jockeys have revolutionized the entertainment arena. Disc jockeys are popularly known as DJs or deejays.

Until recently, the job of a disc jockey was not looked upon as a serious career option. Deejays mostly played at local club events and festivals. Eventually, deejays even performed the task of masters of ceremony at special events. DJs are often invited to play at weddings, church parties, school functions, private parties and special occasions. In most cases, disc jockeying is taken up as a part-time profession.

Some DJs travel with their own sound systems and play from an extensive collection of pre-recorded music or may even create live mixes. DJs are required to have a good ear for music, without which they cant be successful in this profession. There are a number of institutions that impart knowledge regarding mixing and creating sounds and this helps amateurs turn to professionals.

Disc jockeys often select pre-recorded music from their personal collection of music to suit the tastes of an audience. With the help of mixers and controllers they can create multiple music beats and innovative sounds that are unique. A talented deejay endeavors to create an interesting mix of music that encourages people to get on the dance floor.

The term disc jockey was first used to refer to radio announcers who played popular gramophone records, known as discs. DJs play a variety of music, ranging from the usual house, club and hip-hop to pop, salsa and blues to entertain and involve audiences all over the world.

How to Organise a Gig or a Live Music Event - the Budget

Three times in the last month Ive been asked the question, what do I need to do to organise a gig? In reality, when this question is asked it can mean several things: How do I find a venue? How do I sort out the PA? How do I get an audience? And so on.

But there is a stage before all of this: the budget. I would suggest that the moment you start thinking about organising an event you should write a budget. This budget spreadsheet informs you of most things that you will need to consider and will also show you the risk, projected profit and the breakeven point. A sample spreadshhet is available to download from this address http://www.josaka.com/features/2005/Organise-A-Gig/Event-PandL.pdf

If the budget numbers dont look like they are working perhaps the event is not the right thing to be running. If you dont like the level of risk, perhaps you arent cut out to be a promoter.

So the start point is a spreadsheet. This should include all costs and all incomes. The key headings for costs should include: performer cost, PA, lighting, venue hire, marketing, box office costs etc. The income is likely to be largely ticket sales but dont forget the opportunity to add a sponsor to the event.

The spreadsheet will help you work out the breakeven point for the event i.e. how many tickets you need to sell to cover all costs. Every sale beyond breakeven is of course profit (exluding any box office commision). The added bonus of creating an event spreadsheet is that helps define all the key tasks to be performed.

The realisation of the forecasted numbers becoming actual figures suggests that all parties have got the deal they were looking for or agreed to. The sample speadsheet also illustrates that everyone else involved in the gig is largely earning a fixed fee and therefore the only person taking a financial risk is the promoter.

So if you are thinking of organising a live event I coomed you to work on the numbers first. This will help ensure you deliver a great show and have control over the money.

How to Break Your Running Rut

Running is one of the best routes towards losing weight and increasing fitness, not only this but it is absolutely free requiring no monthly gym membership. However, if you choose to run to lose weight or increase fitness, and not for enjoyment then you run the risk of becoming bored. Here are some tips for making your jog/run more interesting and keeping you focused.

Warming up before you run prepares you body for the exercise ahead, thus keeping the fatigue away for longer and decreasing the chance of you giving up too early. Try to change your warm up routine on a weekly or two weekly basis. Further to this if you are new to running then start off slow, exhorting yourself in the first five minutes will tired you out and drain you for the remainder of the run.

Listen to music, it will not only prevent boredom is but it will divert your attention from the sensations of fatigue. Keep the music on your MP3 player up to date and create different playlists to suit your different moods. Studies suggest that music can be stimulating so turn on upbeat dance music and try to synchronize your steps with the beats of the music, build up a rhythm to the music. When using a music player I would suggest using a holder for it, such as the arm band holders on the market at the moment,

Where you jog also has a big impact on your interest levels; if you have been jogging the same route for the past two years then get a map, have a look at all the nearby parks, points of interest or training grounds in the near vicinity and try them all out. Not everyone is affected by their route, but having new surroundings and terrain to cover can often make a run more interesting, and challenging. Don't always opt for the easiest route either, choosing a route which covers stairs or a hills something that although tiring will be very rewarding once you have mastered it; think of the scene in Rocky with the stone steps.

Whilst out, it is a good idea, to not only break your run up a bit but to also increase your performance, to set yourself goals; even if it is to sprint as fast as possible to the next tree or to improve upon your normal time. This will not only make your run a bit more interesting, it can lead to you improving your overall performance. If you find yourself very tired during your run, try to focus on different points on the horizon, focus on reaching them, once you have stop for a 20 second breather and find another spot and repeat the process.

If you often cut your run short due to fatigue or plain laziness then get a friend to jog with you. Having a running partner sharing the same goal will keep you both motivated, having someone to speak to will also help to distract you from your tiredness.

Find a running mate then log onto http://www.fillmytime.com for free and find others in your local area.

Can You Learn Guitar Online?

Like many people you may have had a long standing interest in learning an instrument. However, if you are also like most people you maintain an extremely full schedule. On a daily basis you may find that you barely have time to eat and sleep let alone to enroll in or take guitar lessons. With that in mind, you may have found yourself wondering whether you can learn guitar online.

The fact is that at this point in time there are a variety of options available to you when it comes to playing guitar online. In other words there are websites operating on the Net that offer you the chance to take guitar lessons. Therefore, when it comes to the subject of guitar lessons online, the subject simply is not availability. Rather, the subject is whether these online guitar lessons actually are effective.

The major drawback associated with online guitar lessons is that you do not have an in person instructor guiding you along. Therefore, you have to be the kind of person who can learn without the direct guidance of another person providing you direction in person as you go along.

Perhaps in the final analysis, you might want to consider combining guitar lessons online with at least some practice or lesson time in the brick and mortar world with another person. In this regard, you have two primary tracks that you can follow.

First, you can participate in some real world lessons combined with the time that you spend online learning the guitar. Many people have found this duel approach to be a very good way of learning to play the guitar.

Second, another tactic that you might want to employ is taking guitar lessons online but to find a partner you can practice with in the real world. What you might want to consider doing is taking guitar lessons online with another individual. You both can garner important lesson information from the Net. After you have done so, you can schedule time to practice the guitar together. A growing number of people are taking this approach to great effect and with solid results.

Third, when it comes to taking guitar lessons online, you will want to look for a program that offers a multi-dimensional approach to learning to play the guitar. By this it is meant that you will want to look for a program that offers a variety of tools through which you can learn to play the guitar.

This can include such things as videos that you can watch online and so forth. By having a variety of tools available to you online you will be in the best possible position to be able to make great progress in your efforts to learn to play the guitar through guitar lessons online.

Fourth, when it comes to guitar lessons online, you may want to keep an eye out for a program that allows you the ability to join in forums and chat rooms at the website that sponsors the guitar lessons. Being able to chat and discuss with other students can be an invaluable experience when you are taking guitar lessons today. Sites that offer this type of exchange and experience are few and far between today. However, there is growth in this area and you will want to keep your eyes open for such an option.

Finally, you need to keep in mind that guitar lessons online can be a very convenient experience for you. If you are like most people, the fact that online guitar lessons are so convenient, this may be the best choice for you because of your busy schedule.

Stop wasting money on 1-on-1 guitar lessons! Check out Steve Krenz's Learn and Master Guitar, it beats the pants off anything out there. It's the most comprehensive and thorough instructional guitar course available today. Advanced guitarists should check out http://www.madguitarlicks.com for 35 killer licks to add to their arsenal.

7 Healthy Ways To Release Holiday Stress

Many people go through the motions during Christmas. If not
the whole holiday season just parts. I see them slumped in
line, not a smile to be found, their body stiff, just
counting the number of people ahead of them, and time. Gift
giving or even receiving is right, wrong, good, bad, or
considered a waste. The control of it all, tightens the
body, encompasses the soul, and buries the magic. Where is
the release or where do we begin? It starts mindfully with
a choice, movement in the body, and a change of spirit.
Resolve to release the stress of it all, the need for
control, the right, or the wrong. Stand tall, smile, talk
to your neighbor, give them the acknowledgment just like you
want and deserve whether its one minute or more.

1. Lower back release. Stand facing a wall. Palms flat
against the wall, arms stretched, body angled straight, bend
one knee, and place it closer to the wall. Bend gentle
towards the wall. Close your eyes and see the tension in
your back. Envision it as a light. Mindfully move that
light down your legs out into the floor. If the light
prefers, let it travel through the arms into the wall. It
doesn't matter, just that it goes. What is so nice about
this release is there is usually a wall available anywhere
you go or you can use this release in the shower at home.

2. Breathing exercises cleanse. Lay down, a bed or couch
work well, talk through a speech, or just talk aloud. At
the same time breathe deeply, watch your stomach rise and
fall, the same way a babys does when lying on their back
asleep. This will help you find your authentic voice; it
will probably sound different than ever before. Listen to
that voice, remember it well, use it often and what the
change in people who are listening.

3. Cheek, not facial, squeezing and release can be done
sitting in your office chair or while you are driving.
Squeeze, release, squeeze, release. Alternatively, play
each cheek to the beat of a song. Squeeze first the right,
then the left, and then the right again. Buttock dancing
is a great release for the back and shoulders. Its okay to
laugh through this because it then fades into number 4
below.

4. Laughter. Rent some funny movies or create your own
laughter. Try this: sit, feet firmly on the ground, bend
forward with elbows on your knees. Take a deep breath and
let out a big laugh. A hearty one, the kind from the
stomach, the kind you try to hide. Repeat until you feel
that the body releases the stress. It usually doesn't take
but two or three times. If you are a speaker, do this
before entering the room.

5. Do something wild. Streak across your room; sway naked
in the moonlight, or dance to wild music with your spouse.
Let the hair down, let go of control. When was the last
time you were not in control, the time you left all
inhabitations go, you went with your own personal flow? If
you are a writer, write wildly as if no censorship, no
rules. Use wild, daring words, don't ask what they mean or
spell like they sound. Release the wildness everyday, it
keeps the diseases at bay, its better than an apple a day.
If a runner, fling your arms wildly around, as if going
wild. Because actually, you am. Make ugly faces. Stand up
in front of your computer screen, dance and sway to
imaginary music if none is around. Howl at the moon and
even share it with friends. Bring some drums and strum.

6. Sounds. Let out a "yippee" or a big "yes" loud or soft,
in a car by yourself, or in your cubby hole at your desk
when you have completed something or did something well.
Let out a "You go, Girl" cry with a powerful arm thrust.
Open your mouth wide and verbally say the vowels, "aa, ee,
ii, oo, uu." (This is my favorite release before and after
a speech, it loosens the throat.) Yawn with sounds and
stretch with the yawn. Burp with oops and pride instead of
apology and shame. Its only a body movement nothing more.
When someone else does it, respond well, with jest rather
than a disapproving glare.

7. All choked up. Our throat harbors our unspoken dreams
and uncried tears caused from stress, of trying to be in
control. Use a pillow to muffle, or find a field where no
one can hear, yell and shout, but don't shriek, from the
depth of your belly. This sends any blocked energy from the
throat away. Your voice, even your body, may feel drained
as the toxins held inside get released, especially if you
keep it up for 10 or 15 minutes (your goal). Try this a day
before a speech to lower your pitch and relax your throat.
You will see a new sense of commanding power with a new
authentic voice in your writing or in your speaking.

These are seven various ways to let go of stress in your
body, open up your writing, improve your presentation
quality, or return your self-confidence and personal power.
Its easy to forget we need to let go, become wild into
order to take back our own control. Control of our health
and not take it for granted. You can also use any one of
these in the shower. Singing in the shower is a healthy
release of stress, in tune or not. Health is the one thing
in life money can't buy.
