Staying Power - The Bars And Restaurants That Stand The Test Of Time

Here today, gone tomorrow, bars have a reputation for short-term success. But a few have the ability to ride the times and keep on top of the game.

Ten years ago, I was sitting in The Groucho Club one late summers evening discussing with a now well known haute couture designer, the new wave of drinking culture that was enveloping the capital, arguing that London really had never been so exciting. Up until that point, drinks were very much a secondary element of the overall experience wine was simply white or red, beer came only in a pint glass and vodka was whatever paint-stripper the barman chose to pour. But in the nineties, we were on the cusp of a cocktail movement. New-world wines were making the Chardonnay and Shiraz as commonplace as the Bordeaux, while new conceptual drinks like Red Bull were seriously shaking up the market, broadening peoples drinking landscape and challenging us to think about drinking as more of a lifestyle. Slowly, what was behind the bar appeared to be taking over the focus of the night. People were whispering rumours of late night bars that were open into the wee hours, where glamourous glitterati rubbed hips with the international jet-set over Manhattans and Martinis. They, along with The Groucho, were the places everyone wanted to be seen and their popularity seemed untouchable to all but the most cynical.

Of course, everything has a lifespan, we cynically agreed: fashion is dead in a season, and a fashionable bar well you wouldnt want to bet the house on it would you? We both concluded that fashions simply cant last and those bars, which today were the subject of snaking queues, would quickly turn to yesterdays news as would the drinks that were being quaffed within. Of course, in most cases we werent far wrong. Mondo, Saint, Titanic, Riki Tik... all have fallen by the wayside having once been celebrity favourites of their day. Many others have turned from exclusive A-list excellence to godawful tourist tat. The Gin Sling became the Sea Breeze became the Bramble became the Vanilla Mojito

But its not all doom and gloom. Today, another ten years hence, I am back in the same leather couch of the same Groucho, and ordering from the menu a Red Bull, a drink whose ability to transcend fads and trends seems to symbolise the aspirations of nightlife culture. It has history and heritage and has attained almost timeless appeal. Fashionable works for a while, but every owner, manager and promoter hopes and strives for one thing ultimately and that is to be the next classic. Because the classics, while small in number, exist on a plain far superior to fashion. Dotted amongst the sprawling community of one-off wonders that populate the bar world, a few classics really have stood the test of time, riding the cyclical waves to achieve immortal credibility. The Groucho is one of those timeless classics. Through the years it has always been at the top of its game, its members list comprising the same names that populate the pages of the celebrity press together with the successful and powerful in the world of media.

Nowadays, octogenarian founder members sit comfortably alongside young achievers and its long-term future would appear to be set in stone. Embassy is another long-time winner or more to the point, its ever-present Rock n Roll proprietor, Mark Fuller, who ran the original Embassy twenty years ago with equal success. This most recent incarnation of one of Londons most famous clubs, now with a fine dining restaurant that counts among the capitals very best, and glitzy nightclub in the basement, is a rare constant in the oscillating world of the fashionable. Another face that has always been associated with bar and club supremacy is Jake Panayiotou who ran original celebrity hot-spot, Browns for a decade before moving on in its hay-day. His last few years at the helm of the Wellington Club in Knightsbridge have seen the age-old members club climb to yet new heights. But its not only members clubs that can battle through the ages unscathed. Music-led venues such as Medicine Bar in Islington, Bar Rumba, The Cross, Bar Vinyl and The End have all proved their mettle, while the likes of Hanover Grand, The Gardening Club and Iceni have collapsed into the annuls of hip history.

So, what is it that sets the one-hit-wonders apart from the immortals? What makes a classic? Three characteristics seem to pump through the veins of all the long-term winners.

Quality, choice and adaptability, says Cas, The Grouchos pre-eminent bar manager, as he deftly shakes up cocktails from behind the bar. You have to offer a quality experience in the drinks, the music, the food and the people. You must give customers what they want and you have to adapt to the times. Subtly underlining the point, my Red Bull silently arrives at the table on its own tray, dressed with a single, perfectly folded napkin.

Can staying power really be so simple to achieve? With twenty years of success behind The Groucho, the club is quite an authority on the subject, but it was Darwin who concluded that the fittest win out at the expense of their rivals because they succeed in adapting to their environment. Sounds pretty familiar to me and, lets face it, you cant argue with Darwin.

HERE TO STAY

Our selection of bars that we think will still be doing it in ten years time

MAYFAIR: Embassy

An all-round club for the all-round socialite, Embassy offers food on a par with Michelin starred restaurants, drinks that are as good as any great cocktail bar, a basement club and a guestlist that could double as a whos who of London.

COVENT GARDEN: The End & AKA

One of the capitals most respected dance music venues, with Mr C behind its success. Music is always ahead of its time and drinks are a world away from most dance music venues.

KNIGHTSBRIDGE: Wellington Club

With over 100 years of history, The Wellington has been reborn as an exclusive hangout for the citys hippest. Lounge bar and club rolled into one and popular with the paps and the press alike.

WEST: Woodys

On the banks of Londons longest canal, Woodys has become accepted as the members bar for the music industry. Three floors of food drink and dance with a collection of the best music and cocktail mixologists in the country.

ISLINGTON: Medicine Bar

It was the bar that put Islington on the credible map. One of the original DJ bars that has been made a home to the clubbing community of the 1990s.

CAMDEN: Bar Vinyl

Reputedly the first DJ bar in London, Bar Vinyl combines a record shop with the only bar in Camden really worth its salt. The bar is minuscule, but the offering is enormous and the future is vast.

SHOREDITCH: Home

One of the originators of the Shoreditch movement, Home made its mark before all of the others and continues to hold its own. It has moved from a scraggly basement bar to a slick, but funky cocktail bar and restaurant and continues to define the times.

SOHO: The Groucho

A favourite media hangout, The Groucho is like a party in your own front room with the kind of people that anybody would eat their own right arm to have turn up at their party. Now with a more modern bar on the first floor to complement the leather and wood ground floor classic, it is a members bar that suits all and bound to see in another twenty year term.

HOXTON: Zigfrid

A newcomer to the Hoxton set, Zigfrid is most likely to be here in ten years. Brainchild of leading bar designer, Paul Daly, it appeals to the more creative Hoxtonians and since the district is a hotbed of creativity, its proving pretty popular.

FITZROVIA: Social

A collaboration between bar gurus The Breakfast Group and music gurus, Heavenly Social, this backstreet concrete bunker of a bar offers some of the best DJ-led and live music about. Now with sister venues in Islington and Nottingham, Social is destined for a big future.

Jeremy Mascarenhas has been editorial director of the seminal London Bar Guide magazine http://www.londonbarguide.com for 10 years. He is also global editor of The World Bar Guide, an online guide to the best bars in the world http://www.worldbarguide.com, publisher of The Big Directory (a bar industry bible) and a freelance drinks marketing consultant. He has worked with most of the leading drinks groups including Red Bull, Mot Hennessy, Diageo, Brown Foreman, Budweiser, Asahi, Tiger Beer and Grand Marnier. Through his publishing company Scene It, as well as the London Bar Guide, he has published guides to Sherry, UK nightlife, cocktails, Japanese restaurants, the much lauded London Restaurant Guide and much more besides.

Art And Budget Cuts: Provide The Kids With Art

Ive been harping on the benefits of art and I thought I was tooting my own horn. So when I bumped into an article the other day written beautifully by Lisa L., a teenager from Wisconsin, I thought it was absolutely great. The article was entitled "Benefits of the Arts. While her article also discusses the benefits of music and dance, it speaks of all the arts and her words were more than perfect.

Her essay begins with The arts are an essential part of public education. That sounds like someone would like to do more dancing and singing in class. But, what it says to me is that Lisa understands that art benefits the students in ways few people realize. Lisa goes on to list all the ways in which art helps students develop. But, she mentions one sad fact that for some schools is already true. She is worried that the schools will cut art from the curriculum because of budget cuts.

Art helps students express themselves in ways they normally arent allowed. Classrooms dont offer much discussion and when they do, discussions still have to be monitored by the teacher. But, art allows a student to say what she wants to say. After all, why do you think Lisa wrote her essay? The art of self-expression through writing allows her to put concerns into print where others can understand her and possibly change what will be cut from the school curriculum because of her influence.

In our industrialized nation, we push the maths and sciences. We constantly make those subjects seem more important than all the rest because the political figureheads are convinced that math and science will solve all of our problems. We give scholarships out left and right to college students claiming a math or a science as a major. Other majors are forced to fight for the scraps. But, math and science are process skills.

When I wrote the Arts Most Fun Aspects I wrote about the left and right brain conflict. Art introduces different cognitive abilities that help us solve complex problems. It activates the part of our brain that works without words, but thoughts that cant be expressed in words. It activates the imaginative and creative side, the spatial and intuitive side. While math and science activate logic and analysis, process skills that are basically trial and error, art activates a way of thinking that surpasses normal thinking paths. Not every gap has to be filled. Not every t has to be crossed nor I dotted.

Thats how important art is to academics. Because of how it reaches into the brain, kids get better grades. They enjoy school more. They understand concepts with greater ease. They are more helpful to others who are struggling in school. Art solves problems and Lisa was trying to tell us that.

With money issues facing our schools, parents and teachers alike often find themselves battling uphill battles. As art is pushed to the backburner, parents will see a change in their kids attitudes toward school. Teachers will feel more challenged to meet their demands. But, there is a solution. If art is cut from the schools because of budget issues, parents will only be doing their kids a service by making sure they still have art in their lives.

An internationally known artist as well as a mother of six, Rivky Shimon founded Rivkys Art Workshop in New York. Rivkys step-by-step method for teaching children how to create and enjoy art has earned high praise from students, teachers and parents alike. Through her new training series, Rivky plans to teach artists from across the country how to duplicate her success. Not only to ensure that art education remains a vital part of every childs life, but also to enforce the reality that "The Rivky Method" tm works the same magic for adults as well.

A Thrifty Girls Guide to Living Fabulous For Less in Cleveland

Cleveland is a very affordable city to live fabulously in. You just have to know where the deals are, and plan your week accordingly. I have lived in a downtown Cleveland apartment for over three years now, and I know all the tricks!

Food:
Sushi Rock is one of Cleveland's most popular downtown restaurants. It has great atmosphere, martinis, and of course raw fish! The only problem is it can get a little pricey, except every Wednesday when it is half price sushi night. All of the six piece rolls are half price from 5 to 9pm. The only thing you must remember is; make a reservation by Monday or you will be eating dinner at 9:00pm. The number to make a reservation is (216) 623-1212.

The East Fourth Street Neighborhood is one of the up and coming areas to live in downtown Cleveland. East Fourth street consist of four renovated buildings of apartment rental, 6 different restaurants, the house of blues, Pickwick and frolic, and a bowling alley! Living on this small street can get very expensive. The tasty Mexican restaurant, Zocalo has happy hour Monday-Friday from 2-7pm. During happy hour you can get the classic margarita for five dollars and free chips and salsa. Monday-Wednesday you can bowl at the corner alley for 4.25 and get 3 dollars off martinis, specialty drinks, and appetizers. Even Michael Symons restaurant Lola has lunch specials. You can enjoy a Chicken paillard salad for 12$ or my personal favorite the pressed turkey club for 9$. Google Lola Bistro for more lunch specials.

More Lunch ideas for under 10 dollars:

  • Bricco 1438 Euclid Ave. You can get a grilled salmon sandwich or a chicken salad croissant for 9$. Google Bricco Cleveland for more lunch choices.
  • John Q's Steakhouse 55 Public Square. You can get an open-faced prime rib sandwich or chicken marsala for $9.95. For more information John Q's Steakhouse.
  • Mallorca 1390 West 9th Street. They have a lobster ravioli for 10$ and a grilled chicken salad for 8$. For more lunch special Google Mallorca Cleveland.
  • Bluepoint Grille 700 West St Clair. Lunch specials include a lobster chicken pasts and pan roasted chicken for 10$. Google Bluepoint Cleveland for more information.

Fun:
Want to have a movie night out with the girls for under 10 bucks? Then look no further than the tower city cinema 11. Every Monday night every movie cost only 5 dollars and you get a free small bag of popcorn. Don't worry you suburban people, if you park at Tower city they will validate your parking right at the box office.

Here are three ways you can get super cheap Indians tickets. Go to any participating subway to get a coupon for half off Wednesday night upper box tickets. Bring your Giant Eagle advantage card to any pro shop or box office to receive up to 4 half price lower reserved tickets, these tickets are for July 29th, August 19th, and September 2nd games. And if all else fails buy the cheapest tickets you can and watch the game with all your friends from the Batters eye bar in center field.

Cleveland rocks, Cleveland rocks, Cleveland rocks! In case you don't already know the rock and roll hall of fame is in Cleveland Ohio. They have tons of new exhibits this summer. The Jimi Hendrix exhibit, an RESPECT exhibit about 1960's soul music, and new inductee Madonna can all be seen this summer. What is the cost for you to get into the rock hall? By showing a valid id that proves you have a 440, 441, 442, or 443 zip code only 18 dollars! For more information on the rock halls up coming events Google Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Cleveland.

Cant get away to the Caribbean for a cruise? Then take a cruise around Cleveland! The good time 3 offers a variety of cruises around Lake Erie. Two of my personal favorites are the rush hour cruise and the Friday night dance cruise. The Friday rush hour cruise starts at 5:30 pm and arrives back around 8pm. There are 3 bars, a dance floor, and appetizers on this cruise. The cost is $12.50 per person. If you cant make the 5:30 cruise then hit up the Friday night dance party cruise. It starts at 9pm and arrives back around 11:30pm. There is music, a DJ, and of course 3 bars. This cruise will cost $15.00 per person. If you can get together twenty of your friends you can get special group rates, and the best part is your ticket will be free! Google Goodtime III Cleveland for more information.

In the mood for the fine arts? Make your way to university circle. You can go to the museum of art for free! Most of the special exhibitions at the museum are free as well. The natural history museum and the botanical gardens are both 5$ every Wednesday after 5pm.

More Free things to do in Cleveland:

  • The Cleveland Metropark Zoo is free every Monday to all residents of Cuyahoga County.
  • Huntington beach is Bay Village is free everyday complete with sand, waves, and several grills.
  • Great Lakes brewing company gives free tour of the brewery every Friday from 5-9pm and Saturdays from 1-9pm.

Organizing a Band - Selecting Members

PLANNING

Music is a business. You have to decide how seriously you want to pursue your personal enjoyment versus making money. This is not to say that you can't have both and sometimes if you plan carefully you can have a rewarding experience in every way.

Many of you have played music on different levels and it's good to talk to other musicians to get ideas and learn from their experience. Some musicians are happy to rehearse together only, some are happy to do cover songs and others write and play original content and go for the big time. No matter what you decide, the planning of your endeavor is a most often ignored and important part of your success.

SELECTING MEMBERS

The most critical part of having a good band is finding members that can play and get along. You don't have to be best friends but it helps as you are going to be spending a lot of time trying to be creative with these people.

Planning your song list before you start selecting band members is also important. You will better know what you need and you can always make adjustments once you get started.

In my opinion, there are two critical areas that must be covered first. One is the rhythm section and the other is lead singing.

Drummers, Bass Players, Guitar, Horn, and Keyboard players can be great solo players and poor band members. It's so easy to fall in love with soloists who can "play the heck" out of their axe. What you really need is a simple driving drummer and bass player that can keep time and provide the bottom. A really good guitar and/or keyboardist can enhance the sound by playing complimentary rhythms. Of course if you can find players that can do these basics and play great solos and fill parts then you really have an advantage.

There are many good bands around that become mediocre because they have mediocre singing. If the audience is not responding it most likely is the singing. When selecting a singer sometimes it's good to have some friends come to the audition rehearsal. They can give you valuable feedback from a non-musician perspective. If a singer can't connect with the audience, your whole band disconnects.

If you want to do three or four part harmonies selecting band members becomes very difficult. It's hard to find good players that sing too. If that is what you want, plan for lots of extra time selecting members as they are hard to find. Tell anyone asking for more pay because they sing and play an instrument to hit the road.

Sometimes a male and female band mix or varying ages can be a problem. Make sure everyone is clear about the content of your plan for songs and that sex and sax are two completely different things.

If you can, before your final selection of musicians, spend some time chatting with them. Get an idea about their lifestyle and interests outside of music. Find out how much time they can devote to the band. Make sure everyone has input in the selection, even your quiet or shy members.

Stage presence is also important. Not that everyone has to do a James Brown imitation or become Rodney Dangerfield but at least get into the music, smile, or do something.

Musicians have egos. That can be a good thing. Make sure your members will have the willingness to compromise a little. If you can keep a band together for a year, it will be twice as good from when you started. Every year that you're together, sit down and expand your plan to do more challenging things. Avoid players who only want to do things they know. If you're not learning, playing with better musicians, and trying new things for everyone you will run out of gas.

High School Musical Rockin Dance Party!

Everyone is a a Star at a High School Musical Dance Party! With the 3rd installment of the HSM series coming late in summer 2008 this event is sure to be a huge hit! Invitations: Purchase the matching theme invitations or make your own tickets or backstage passes by visiting says-it.com and choosing the template for "concert tickets." Its totally free and super easy! Fill out what you want the ticket or pass to say, download, save and then print out as many copies as you need. Simple! I created a pretend invite on the right hand side so you can see what they look like.

There are several shapes, colours and designs to choose from. Use phrases like "Backstage Access'',"VIP Only" and "Admit One." The tickets would look great on card stock and the passes would look great on regular paper, laminated and hole punched with a lanyard or string attached. The kids can wear them to the party! Decorations: Create a scene right out of a High School Dance. Use plenty of red & white balloons and streamers. Try to get yourself a disco ball and some strobe lights to really set the mood for dancing! Using the name of each and every guest, make large yellow or foil stars with their name written in it. Take those stars and make a wall of fame by mixing the "guest stars" in with pictures and posters of the actors and actresses from the High School Musical movies. Hang stars, Cd's, records, pom poms, garland and pennants from the ceiling with fishing wire. Don't forget to pull out your Christmas lights and hang them all over your walls. Wouldn't it be amazing to have a DJ - O.k, that's a bit much but make sure you have good stereo on hand with a huge selection of HSM music and popular top 40 cd's. Activities: A dance lesson would be great.

Call you local Dance Studio and see if they have a student that would be willing to come the party and teach a short routine from the movie. Games: "Name That Tune" - Play short clips from the soundtrack and popular top 40 songs. Have the guest try to name the tune and if they can, they get 1 token. If they can sing the next line they will win an additional token. I will explain the tokens in a bit so stay with me. "Who said It" - Before the party, write down several lines from the movie and the character that said it. On separate slips of paper, write 1 line only (not who said it) and place in a hat or basket. Take turns by passing the hat around and having each guest choose a piece of paper and reading the quote out loud. They then have a chance to guess. If they are correct they win a token. "Hoop Toss" - The HSM kids love their East High Wildcats Basketball Team so be sure to add a b-ball activity. Why not set up a hoop toss. You can use an indoor ball and net or make your own with a wastebasket and any ball you have on hand. Every player gets 10 shots and 1 token is awarded for every basket made. The kids will really want to know what these tokens are for by now! To start the dancing portion, play a few rounds of dance freeze and have some spot dances. "Dance Freeze" is when you abruptly stop the music and the dancers must immediately freeze in whatever posoitiion they are in. If they can hold their position they are awarded 1 token. "Spot" dances is simply when you choose a certain spot in the room and whoever is closest to that spot at the end of the song wins - 1 token. Make sure you keep a running list of all the tokens awarded.

Start off each child with 10 tokens and add on from there. The Menu: A cafeteria line of course! Borrow some plastic trays from your local fast food joint and let the kids line up single file and choose their meal. Have individual servings of hamburgers & hot dogs wrapped in foil, mini pizzas, fries in baskets, salads in cups and a selection of sodas, juice boxes and milks in those small containers. Make a "Cafeteria" sign and provide the lunch lady with a hairnet! Finally we get to the tokens! Switch out the "Cafeteria" sign for an "HSM Concession Stand" sign. During the last half hour of the party set up your concession stand. The Concession stand should consist of items that you would put in their loot bags like bags of chips, candies, chocolate bars, pop, cookies & gum, tattoos, glow sticks, hackey sacks, microphones, key chains, pencils, erasers, costume jewelry and licensed HSM favors. The key is to have a wide assortment of different items as all kids will not choose the same things. In this situation it would be safer to over buy and then return items if you do not use them. Give each child their allotted tokens and a paper lunch bag or a licensed HSM loot bag to fill.

The tokens can be bingo markers, play coins, paper tickets, pennies or buttons for that matter! Have a token board with the items listed for sale and their cost in tokens for the kids to see. The more costly the item, the more tokens they cost. For example, an eraser is 1 token, a pack of bubblegum is 2 tokens and a microphone is 3 tokens. To be fair, have them line up by the amount of the tokens they won - for example the lowest to highest. Have each child in turn buy 1 item and then return to the back of the line. Keep going until all the tokens have run out. This takes a bit of planning but provides a very exciting element to the party! The kids take home things they actually want and will use - not just forget about and throw away!

Top 5 Instrumental Wedding Music Choices

Aside from the music that you will have at your reception as the party gets under way for your wedding, you will also need to have some instrumental music planned for your ceremony walk down the aisle. Instrumental wedding music can also be used for your reception entrance music and for your first dance if you so desire. Here are 5 of the most popular options.

1. The Classical Masters. These are composers from many years ago like Beethoven, Bach, Handel, Tchaikovsky, Chopin and Verdi. They have composed elegant, wonderful music that is romantic and perfect for weddings.

2. Love song classics. Instead of dancing to a sung version of your favorite song, let your love shine through by dancing to an instrumental version of it. Something with gorgeous music like the theme song from Love Story or a contemporary twist on My Heart Will Go On from Titanic can all be wonderful for your wedding.

3. An instrumental choice for your wedding may be strange for some people as nowadays most people want to party all night long. If you are having a morning or afternoon wedding, however, you can have soft background music for when the guests arrive and during your reception lunch.

4. Light jazz or lounge music will add just the right atmosphere for a Cuban style wedding reception. A sensual rumba or salsa can be played and to make the evening more enjoyable you can have professional dancers there to show you a few of the cool moves.

5. Another instrumental wedding music choice is a funkier one. This is that of dance music. For a younger crowd this will get everyone dancing to create a more nightclub type venue. You can also use trans music and certain types of house music. Just be sure to include some other styles to ensure that everyone of every age has fun.

Different Types of Neon Car Lights

There are many types of interior car lights that you can find in the market. In fact, the interior lighting systems of cars are the most sought after market accessories. So, you will never run out of options when you decide to pimp the interior lighting systems of your vehicle.

You can choose from a wide variety of colors, lighting designs and effects. These neon interior car lights can be installed under the dash board or car seats. It can also be installed on the audio panels of your car.

Some neon interior car lights can even be configured to dance in sync with the music from the car audio system. So, you not only get an excellent lighting system, you can also recreate your car to become a virtual dance floor whenever you play music from the radio.

When buying neon interior car lights, you should look for a starter kit that is easy to install. Usually, these starter kits are prefabricated lighting system complete with wirings, switches, and installation panels. Setting it up in your car would be a touch and go procedure.

Always Refer to the Instructions

When installing car interior lights, make sure that the installation instructions and the circuitry diagram of your car are always at hand. The installation manual can guide you on the step by step procedure of interior car lighting setup. On the other hand, the circuitry manual can provides the layout of your car's electrical system.

By having these manuals, you can keep your self and your car away from electrical hazards. You can also avoid wrong installation and faulty circuit system set-up. Threshing out everything could save you lots of money from re-installation and repair.

4 Step Installation Guide

The following basic installation guide can serve only as a general reference. This is to provide you with a general idea on what are involved when installing neon interior car lights.

1. The very first thing you need to do is disconnect all power source of your car. This means disconnecting the plugs that are attached to the car battery. To be sure though, you can disconnect the negative cable and ensuring that it cannot be grounded on any part of your car.

2. Next is to decide where to set up the interior lights. This step is usually dependent on the type of lighting that you have bought.

There are kits that are suitable for dashboards while others are only applicable on the panels of your car's stereo system. Wherever it may be, you need to squeeze your creative juices so that you can install the neon lighting at the best place in your car.

3. The third step involves configuring where to place the toggle switches of your interior lights. It is always best to install it where you can reach it easily. Some neon lighting kits come complete with switches so this step would not pose much difficulty for you.

4. Fourth step is to decide if you want your interior car lights to be in sync with the headlights. When you turn on the headlights, the interior lighting will also be activated. If you want this feature, you have to tap into the wire that activates your headlights. You can find this wire under the dash. You can refer to your car circuitry manual if you are not familiar with the wirings of your car.

However, if you want your interior lights to be independent from the headlights, use the lighting system switch panel and plug it into a power source. Normally, this involves plugging the lighting system switches directly to a main power cable connected to the car battery. In this way, even if your car is idle, the interior lighting system can still work.

After everything is connected, reattach the negative battery cable and start testing your new interior lighting system. If it produces dim lights or below average illumination, you can check the car's wiring setup again for possible loose connections.

These are basically the general steps involved when installing your set of neon interior car lights. After installation, you can now flaunt your card to your friends. You can also participate in a car show and who knows, your car might be the next car show champion.

Musical Feuds

There are many famous instances of immortal musicians being insulted by other famous musicians.

Johann Sebastian Bach, like most musicians of the day, worked as a church musician. He was anything but docile, and was known to rankle easily.

He was once reproved for playing "strange harmonies" during a church service. Bach's answer was to play even stranger harmonies the next Sunday, and this from the greatest composer of religious music the world has ever seen, the composer of the St. Matthew Passion.

Still steaming, the elders complained again to Bach and added the insult that the music was at some points "too long."

The next Sunday, of course, the music was much too short.

Beethoven also had his feuds, especially in the early years when he was establishing himself as a great pianist.

A worthless popinjay named Steibelt had made it known that he thought Beethoven a terrible pianist, and in essence challenged Beethoven to a musical duel, a common occurrence in those days. Beethoven despised Steibelt, for he was in truth a talentless oaf that foolishly dared to challenge a great master.

At a party the next week, Beethoven heard Steibelt playing one of his own compositions, an insipid Trio for piano, violin and cello. It was the type of horrid, elaborately ornamented fluff that Beethoven reviled, but he watched calmly as Steibelt finished the piece and took his bows.

A hush fell over the crowd as Beethoven appeared out of the shadows and walked toward the piano. Everyone was aware of the grudge between Steibelt and Beethoven and the air was thick with apprehension.

Steibelt, startled by the angry look on the master's face, stepped away from the piano.

As Beethoven walked past the cello's music stand, he snidely grabbed the cello's sheet music.

Carefully showing the astounded crowd the page of sheet music, Beethoven sat at the piano and then put the music, upside down, onto the piano music stand.

As Steibelt and the hushed crowd watched, Beethoven plunked out the notes of the upside down cello part, forcefully jabbing with his pointed and angry index finger, not taking his eyes off Steibelt.

Then Ludwig began to improvise like a madman on Steibelt's upside down cello part theme. The crowd was carried away with Beethoven's angered showmanship.

And it was magnificent, one of those legendary Beethoven improvisations that have gone down in history, a passionate outpouring of ideas and bravura, until at last the piece was over with a furious ending and crash.

Curiously, Steibelt was never heard from again.
