How To Make Your Wedding Music Rock

Your wedding is one of the most significant days of your life, and as such, you want everything, from the moment you awaken to the honeymoon, to be perfection so you have great memories. Naturally, the reception also included, and this means you will want to take precautions in choosing the music for your wedding reception.

Ensuring that you have great music for your wedding reception means a lot more then just finding a guy who can play "The Chicken Dance" at some point during the evening. Choosing a good provider for the music at your wedding reception can set the tone for the whole evening and create more memories of your special day, whether good or bad. Knowing how to choose your wedding entertainment will increase your chance that those memories are good ones.

Ensure There's Music

It seems silly to state the obvious, but ensure that the person providing the music at your wedding reception has a wide range of music; you don't want to attend your reception and find that the selection of wedding music is limited to a handful of awful ballads that no one seems to like. A wide range of music in your provider's collection means that requests at the reception can be handled. If you'd like to hear a special song while at your reception, ensure that the person providing the music at your wedding reception can play it.

And while you talk with your provider about the music, ascertain that he will have all the equipment to play it. You don't want to host your wedding at your local community center only to find that the most your music provider has brought is his stereo system from home.

Ensure it Flows

Be sure to discuss with your provider before and how the music will fit accordingly with the tone of your reception. If you intend for the happy couple's special song to be played after the cutting of the cake, be sure to tell your music provider. It will seem awkward if the music at your wedding reception isn't played at the appropriate times. Don't hesitate to ask the person providing music at your wedding reception for advice on music to choose or timing for particular songs. If you've picked an experienced provider of wedding reception music, you will have a great source of advice about what has and hasn't worked for other wedding receptions.

And on the subject of finding an experienced provider, be sure to obtain references and make a point to check them. You don't want to discover on the day of your wedding that your DJ tends to hit the open bar more often then he hits the record table. With care and some planning beforehand, though, you'll have a selection of wonderful music along with your wonderful wedding.

Indie Labels Vs Major Record Companies

The music industry has been bemoaning its fate, as the costs of promoting artists and their songs soar while sales slump. It seems that it's facing a slow, self-inflicted implosion. It blames its demise on the Internet and the easy access that fans have to music that has yet to be released for public consumption. Independent record labels, on the other hand, are reveling in the public attention that the Internet brings to their artists. According to independent record labels, business is booming and prospects have never looked better.

An expense that major record companies have that Indie labels have been clever enough to avoid is playtime on commercial radio stations. Major labels have to pay from $400,000 up, in order to get one song on air. Indie labels tend not to even approach large commercial stations as they know that they can't afford all the promotion costs that are included in the deal. They prefer to work with college and public radio stations that are usually more receptive to music that is not mainstream and conformist.

Another marketing strategy that has helped to increase album sales for indie labels is that they target consumers who are still willing to pay for music. This group consists mostly of grown-ups who feel that they have to pay for what they own and don't have a "if I can get it for free I will" attitude. Adults have a greater sense of ethical responsibility and a respect for hard work, and are less likely to download music for free.

Many artists are adopting a more extreme independent approach by forming their own record labels. This allows them to have complete creative control over the record making process and is the ultimate in self-expression for any indie artist.

Most artists think that signing with a major label will be their ticket to the big time and that the money will come rolling in. In fact, artists have to sell about 1 million albums before they start seeing their share of the profits, as their studio time and all of the "perks" of the business, such as the limo rides, are charged against their royalties. Royalties might also be heavily weighted in favour of the label. Many artists are surprised to find that they earn only $1 per disc sold.

Compare that with an indie label, which with careful planning and budgeting, is able to keep marketing and overhead expenses within a manageable range. With expenses down, the profit margin is larger. They also have fairer profit sharing deals, often splitting profits equally between the label and the artist. When it comes to selling discs, indie artists can sell discs at a concert and make a decent profit from sales numbering in the thousands only.

One of the biggest and perhaps most distinguishing differences between indie and major labels is that indie labels let artists keep the rights to their work. Large labels have the option of not releasing any music an artist has recorded, and all the while the artist remains bound to them by contract and can't sign up with any other label. The artist is taken out of the public eye and effectively has his or her career terminated at the whim of the label.

Many experts involved in the music industry have predicted that major record labels are going the way of the dinosaur. They attribute this mainly to the large labels' inability to read and react to activity in the music market. Large labels create such huge promotional vehicles around their artists that it takes them too long to react to a drop in record sales, and change their marketing strategy. Conversely, if an artist's sales pick up after a slump, it takes the label too long to get a large promotional and marketing strategy off the ground. Indie labels, on the other hand, are ideally placed to take advantage of market movements, as they are small and can move quickly to capitalise on opportunities or invest in some damage control.

It's been said that big labels have forgotten what's important in the music industry, that the artists are the resource to be treasured and not the songs. Indie music and, as a product, indie labels have never forgotten this fact. Artists have always been recognised as respected contributors to the music industry. They have always been fairly counted into whatever profits there may have been. Indie labels do their best to adhere to the principles and culture upon which the indie scene has been built. By doing this, they have managed to achieve comparatively more success than the big boys in the industry. This must be a big blow to those who believe that non-conformists will never be successful in life.

RIAA Files Second Wave of Lawsuits

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has launched a second wave of lawsuits against users of internet2 (a specialized high speed version of the internet that makes it ideal for file sharing). By adding 20 new schools to the list, RIAA has greatly expanded the number of students involved in the case.

"As long as students continue to corrupt this specialized academic network for the flagrant theft of music, we will continue to make it clear that there are consequences for these unlawful actions," said Cary Sherman, President, RIAA. "With the multitude of legal music alternatives available to students today, there is simply no excuse for this ongoing, illegal downloading on college campuses."

RIAA is the trade group that represents the U.S. recording industry. Its mission is to foster a business and legal climate that supports and promotes our members' creative and financial vitality. Its members are the record companies that comprise the most vibrant national music industry in the world. RIAA members create, manufacture and/or distribute approximately 90% of all legitimate sound recordings produced and sold in the United States.

"Whether its done on a computer at home or one in a college dorm room, the act of theft is one and the same," said Sherman. "These lawsuits have had a significant educational impact on the public and have helped to arrest the staggering growth of digital music theft. We will continue to aggressively pursue them."

Download TV Series - To Pay or Not To Pay?

If you are a TV fan who is now fed up trying downloading your favorite TV series episodes because of frequent virus threats and incomplete downloads, many will suggest you to use Amazon and iTunes instead of torrent networks. No doubt, they are giving you a better advice.

If you ask for my opinion, I think price is also an issue so I will not recommend you any of these. I will advise you to look for cheaper options to carry on with this hobby.

You may be TV lover who is fond of downloading a lot of programs and it is becoming heavy on your pocket. So to satisfy your cravings for these shows, start looking for more affordable options. Liking these episodes is one thing and affording them is other. Don't be worried though, because there are better options available.

Interest Your Child In Piano

A frequent question is, "How do we get our child to practice the piano?"I always stop them politely and say, "Please, say 'Play the piano' not 'Practice the piano.' "If you make the piano into a game, you might get the child to try playing piano on their own, not under your orders. For example, your child undoubtedly has a favorite toy or game. You don't have to say, "Go play your game," because the child ALWAYS wants to do that activity which brings them such personal reward. To learn the piano even moderately well (even as an adult) you'll need not only persistence, hard work and a lot of intelligence, but also one other quality: love. That's right, you'll have to love the piano in order to weather all that repetition, confusion and effort, not to mention the time involved. What could possibly make so many people work so hard to master this great instrument? The answer is, because they love the instrument.

And this is also the answer to the original question, "How do we get our child to practice the piano?"You get them to play because it's so much fun that they do it themselves. There is no "practicing." You don't have to tell them to practice. They play the piano as if it were a toy, a treasured toy they like to spend time with, until they're done with it, and then off to another happy activity. Now, for children, this is very easy to accomplish. How? Simply lower the bar initially to the degree that the child cannot fail, can only succeed.

Make initial lessons so much fun that the child begins to want to explore the world of music through the piano. Do this as long as the child needs it until they demonstrate comfort playing simple music.

As an example, let them play with their index finger, as their instincts tell them and piano teachers see again and again. It teaches the child no bad habits because the "one finger system" will be gradually improved upon. How? By using simple finger and note games. See the article on Fingering. Basically, a fingering curriculum might be to let the child play with one index finger initially, preferably the right index finger. It doesn't matter if the child is left or right handed, start with the right index finger.

Then let them play with the index fingers of both hands. Then introduce the right thumb. Then use the right thumb and index together as a team. Then introduce the right middle finger as the third member of the team.

And all this finger stuff and games is before they ever see a note of music!

Always let them go back to a simpler system (one finger) if they demonstrate repeated discomfort with a more complex finger position (more than one finger.)

Discomfort is a child's way of saying, "You're going too fast."

It's far more important that the child feels proud and happy than you, the teacher, feel your method has been understood and mastered. The child doesn't care about your "method," or any method. They care about how they feel about themselves and how they feel about the piano. It's simple human natureAfter a little rest (simplicity,) they are ready for another try at reading music, but never press beyond the point of "mostly fun with a little work."Better to back off while it's still fun, and try again another day when they're fresh: it's hard work to learn the piano and you're better off if you and your teacher are not in a hurry. With a child it's not difficult to get them started without anxiety, but it requires a teacher of almost Biblical patience.Give your student a system that is transparently simple, like piano by number, and let them play by themselves. Hopefully your only problem will be getting enough songs for them to consume and explore.

Kids get very good quickly with piano by number, and then, at the time they become comfortable, of course, is the perfect moment to introduce reading music, for they are already comfortable with the instrument and able to play familiar songs reasonably well, in a way that makes them feel proud.

You'll need a good teacher, a very, very patient, almost saintly creature who is funny, articulate, and always has a secret curriculum in mind, reading music.Allow the child time to demonstrate that they are ready pass beyond the world of preparatory piano games and attempt to start to read music.

This "time" could be a week, could be a year, and is entirely dependent on the particular child. Almost the only mistake you can make is to go too fast.

All children start learning the piano in different ways, and a good teacher unlocks the way of teaching that gets them started and makes them love it from the very first minute.

This "magic way," is different for each child, can be humor, it can be math, it can be them imitating what you play, it can be sound games, it can be number games, it can be "Name That Tune," it can be playing with your nose, but don't let them leave that piano with anything in mind but, "Wow, that was FUN!"Delay reading music until the child is comfortable playing simple, familiar songs by number. And when you begin to read music, make each attempt initially no longer than a minute or so. That's right, a minute at a time. The concepts have to be broken down into such simple units that only a minute is required to make a child understand each idea.Later, those ideas are drawn together, allowing the child to easily find the notes on the page on the piano.

You can use the concepts in our book I CAN READ MUSIC, and as a practical matter, never go to the next idea until you are absolutely certain the child can unfailingly master each simple idea (such as lines and spaces, what is a note, where is middle C, etc.)

I've said it before: the worst habit you can learn at the piano is to not enjoy it and not want to play. That's the habit that will make you want to quit.

What is Curry Karaoke?

Karaoke is the act of singing along to recorded background music; it originates from Japan and in Japanese means empty orchestra.

It is rumoured that karaoke was invented In Japan in the 1970s, when a Japanese musician was asked by fans to provide a recording of his performance so that they could sing along on their vacation. Realising this potential the musician then developed a machine that for 100 yen would play his songs; the machine was originally leased out and not immediately available in stores as they are nowadays. Unfortunately for the Japanese musician a Filipino businessman recognised the potential market for such a machine and patented a sing-a-long system to be sold in stores along with the music.

Karaoke's popularity has lasted since its invention in the 1970's and has continued to be a popular form of entertainment and it has reached great success across the globe. Many bars, restaurants and clubs install karaoke machines into their venue, or hold karaoke nights to capitalise upon its popularity.

The concept Curry Karaoke was developed in Glasgow; combining the nations two favourite things, Indian food and karaoke, with such CurryOke nights happening across the city it is no wonder that Glasgow has been named the Curry Capital of the UK. With the Ashoka restaurant on Elderslie Street offering a Curry Karaoke package of a private function suite, large Indian buffet, karaoke, party games and fancy dress outfits it sounds like Curry Karaoke is the ultimate in party nights. Providing an excellent alternative to your average birthday party or staff night out a Curry Karaoke night will provide endless fun, good food and some brilliant photo opportunities; most definitely a different kind of night out.

Visit the Ashoka Website for a menu and photographs from the many Curry Karaoke nights that they put on.

A Thrifty Girls Guide to Living Fabulous For Less in Cleveland

Cleveland is a very affordable city to live fabulously in. You just have to know where the deals are, and plan your week accordingly. I have lived in a downtown Cleveland apartment for over three years now, and I know all the tricks!

Food:
Sushi Rock is one of Cleveland's most popular downtown restaurants. It has great atmosphere, martinis, and of course raw fish! The only problem is it can get a little pricey, except every Wednesday when it is half price sushi night. All of the six piece rolls are half price from 5 to 9pm. The only thing you must remember is; make a reservation by Monday or you will be eating dinner at 9:00pm. The number to make a reservation is (216) 623-1212.

The East Fourth Street Neighborhood is one of the up and coming areas to live in downtown Cleveland. East Fourth street consist of four renovated buildings of apartment rental, 6 different restaurants, the house of blues, Pickwick and frolic, and a bowling alley! Living on this small street can get very expensive. The tasty Mexican restaurant, Zocalo has happy hour Monday-Friday from 2-7pm. During happy hour you can get the classic margarita for five dollars and free chips and salsa. Monday-Wednesday you can bowl at the corner alley for 4.25 and get 3 dollars off martinis, specialty drinks, and appetizers. Even Michael Symons restaurant Lola has lunch specials. You can enjoy a Chicken paillard salad for 12$ or my personal favorite the pressed turkey club for 9$. Google Lola Bistro for more lunch specials.

More Lunch ideas for under 10 dollars:

  • Bricco 1438 Euclid Ave. You can get a grilled salmon sandwich or a chicken salad croissant for 9$. Google Bricco Cleveland for more lunch choices.
  • John Q's Steakhouse 55 Public Square. You can get an open-faced prime rib sandwich or chicken marsala for $9.95. For more information John Q's Steakhouse.
  • Mallorca 1390 West 9th Street. They have a lobster ravioli for 10$ and a grilled chicken salad for 8$. For more lunch special Google Mallorca Cleveland.
  • Bluepoint Grille 700 West St Clair. Lunch specials include a lobster chicken pasts and pan roasted chicken for 10$. Google Bluepoint Cleveland for more information.

Fun:
Want to have a movie night out with the girls for under 10 bucks? Then look no further than the tower city cinema 11. Every Monday night every movie cost only 5 dollars and you get a free small bag of popcorn. Don't worry you suburban people, if you park at Tower city they will validate your parking right at the box office.

Here are three ways you can get super cheap Indians tickets. Go to any participating subway to get a coupon for half off Wednesday night upper box tickets. Bring your Giant Eagle advantage card to any pro shop or box office to receive up to 4 half price lower reserved tickets, these tickets are for July 29th, August 19th, and September 2nd games. And if all else fails buy the cheapest tickets you can and watch the game with all your friends from the Batters eye bar in center field.

Cleveland rocks, Cleveland rocks, Cleveland rocks! In case you don't already know the rock and roll hall of fame is in Cleveland Ohio. They have tons of new exhibits this summer. The Jimi Hendrix exhibit, an RESPECT exhibit about 1960's soul music, and new inductee Madonna can all be seen this summer. What is the cost for you to get into the rock hall? By showing a valid id that proves you have a 440, 441, 442, or 443 zip code only 18 dollars! For more information on the rock halls up coming events Google Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Cleveland.

Cant get away to the Caribbean for a cruise? Then take a cruise around Cleveland! The good time 3 offers a variety of cruises around Lake Erie. Two of my personal favorites are the rush hour cruise and the Friday night dance cruise. The Friday rush hour cruise starts at 5:30 pm and arrives back around 8pm. There are 3 bars, a dance floor, and appetizers on this cruise. The cost is $12.50 per person. If you cant make the 5:30 cruise then hit up the Friday night dance party cruise. It starts at 9pm and arrives back around 11:30pm. There is music, a DJ, and of course 3 bars. This cruise will cost $15.00 per person. If you can get together twenty of your friends you can get special group rates, and the best part is your ticket will be free! Google Goodtime III Cleveland for more information.

In the mood for the fine arts? Make your way to university circle. You can go to the museum of art for free! Most of the special exhibitions at the museum are free as well. The natural history museum and the botanical gardens are both 5$ every Wednesday after 5pm.

More Free things to do in Cleveland:

  • The Cleveland Metropark Zoo is free every Monday to all residents of Cuyahoga County.
