Into the Light World Tour

Captured during a two-night stand at a Dutch arena, this 100-minute concert special documents Gloria Estefan's lavish 1991 world tour, which underscored the Cuban-American singer's graduation from acclaim as a dance-floor diva to the ranks of female pop superstars. At its best, Into the Light World Tour displays the relentless energy, personal warmth, and crack musicianship that Estefan and her husband, producer, and principal collaborator, Emilio Estefan Jr., had evolved through her old band, the Miami Sound Machine, and taken uptown through her solo career. When the star and her band kick into high gear, percussion simmering and horns blazing in taut, deftly arranged choruses, the propulsive lure of salsa is hard to resist.

Technically, Estefan is a singer with a supple tone but modest range, hardly suggesting the caliber expected of a bona fide diva. Neither does her small, compact frame suggest a dancer's physique, despite the production's reliance on extended dance sequences. Yet she makes the most with what she has, harnessing formidable physical energy and transmitting considerable warmth to her audience. Her material, including both Miami Sound Machine hits and subsequent solo signatures, works best when staying closest to her roots, riding the giddy syncopations of uptempo Latin rhythms, or plying the lambent emotions of traditional ballads. Her exhortations to dance--"Get on Your Feet," "Conga," and "Rhythm Is Gonna Get You" being the inevitable faves--work handily with an ecstatic audience.

More grizzled viewers should be forewarned that this, like most recent concert films, isn't purely documentary--apart from backstage sequences that duly flatter the star, the live sound has been liberally sweetened during post-concert production. --Sam Sutherland

A verruca (plantar wart) is a type of wart found on the lower limb (sole of the foot). It is no different to that of a common wart as we know them - but because of the body weight pressing down onto the verruca it then becomes painful and sore. The appearance of this foot wart - is slightly raised and round with a thickened edge of surrounding skin. Other signs and strong points to look out for - to decipher this type of verruca is that of fine tiny black dots. It is not uncommon to find a cluster of them to appear all together.

A mound/clump or clusters of small warts are referred to as 'mosaic warts' - these you will be happy to hear are usually painless. If you are a concerned parent and worried about the children developing warts then do not worry because, this type of verruca in minors - tend to appear and then disappear. I don`t want to burst any ones bubble but warts on adults can persist for a long time (years) if left unattended (not treated).
Just like other warts, a verruca can stem from the strains of the papillomavirus.

Do not be alarmed but papillomavirus is present in huge amounts on a vast majority of different humans which is carried on the surface of their skin. This will not cause any harm or cause problems unless it pierces the skin. Unhealthy and neglected skin e.g. skin with fine cracks on the surface may well be the likely place for this to happen.

There is no real proven guarantee that a verruca is picked up in swimming pools as a great many people are led to believe. In saying that, there is without a doubt plenty of papillomavirus around swimming pools etc, particularly so in the shower area. Remember you are very unlikely to get a verruca if your skin is without flaws. A good idea to minimize any risk if this is a big worry for you is, to consider wearing flip-flops or open sandals in the shower.

If those dancing shoes are left on the shelf for to long - you may just forget how to tango or rumba. Some good advice is to pop along to the doctor so that he/she can check you over. Try not swap shoes.

Opening Up the Appetizer Menu at Fresno's Pangea Restaurant

Over the last few years, we have seen quite a growth in the number of really good restaurants opening up in Fresno. Now, it is time to add Pangea to the top of that list.

Located in the heart of Fig Garden Village in Fresno, Pangea is the sister establishment to another great restaurant, Campagnia. With a family connection like that, Pangea automatically gets extra points from me.

My first foray into Pangea was back in late December. I stopped in while doing a story on New Year's Eve dining around the Central Valley. From what I have learned, the name Pangea, when translated, means 'All Earth.' Very earthy, huh? Well, don not let the name fool you. There are no hippy lovefest earth-children from the 60s serving you recycled food or making you wear hemp clothing.

No, instead, this 'All Earth' is very chic and sophisticated. From the walls to the tables to the sign on the door, I was really impressed at how the earth tone elements mixed with modern furniture designs. Basically, its stone age meets futuristic steel. Very hot! At Pangea, the experience goes way beyond the design and the furniture.

From their website, Pangea's staff writes, "Meant to be enjoyed among friends, Pangea is a dining experience, likened to a trip around the globe, of fine cuisine and premier spirits from every corner of our world."

The website goes on to say, "At Pangea Restaurant, our global flavors range from Pacific Rim and Latin to Mediterranean and Italian, and eclectic California Cuisine. Because our menu consists of various small plates; larger than typical tapas and smaller than an entree, we refer to our menu as 'global small plates.' We encourage the sharing of our dishes, which allows everyone to try many of our items in one sitting in an elegant, casual and fun environment."

I agree! Pangea is very eclectic-chic. In fact, it is a very new, different experience for the uber-traditional style of the Central Valley.

Because I had to hit six other restaurants in the next two hours, I did not get to stay at Pangea for more than a few minutes. But I promised myself, I would be back real soon. And I made good on my promise, returning later with two friends. We went for a late lunch, but ended up just ordering drinks and filling up on appetizers at the bar.

Actually, that was a good choice because we each ordered a few appetizers, a few drinks, gorged on the free bread and hung out for a while. Since it was not very crowded, we were able to ask the bar and wait staff for their suggestions on which appetizers they thought rocked.

Well, thank you staff members. You were right four out of four times. Here is the rundown of our appetizer feast and the prices (which are highly affordable).

Seared beef nigiri, asparagus & enoki mushroom with wasabi aioli ($5.00) This tops the list of my favorite appetizers of all time. The beef is sweet and tangy, which goes perfect with the asparagus. The taste is intensified by the wasabi aioli. Nice!

Pangea California roll in soy paper ($8) You really can't go wrong ordering a California roll anywhere. But I've not found any one who does it better than the Sushi makers of Pangea.

Crunchy Mexican spicy tuna roll topped with chipotle citrus aioli ($12) It's Latin ... it's Asian ... it's fusion done right.Tasty.

Ginger and garlic poached bok choy ($3) When we first decided to order this, I wasn't so sure I was going to like it. But for three bucks, I was willing to take a chance. It was pretty tasty. I was shocked, surprised and eventually, ordered a second round for the table.

And let us not forget the bread and the amazing Roasted Red Pepper Hummus. Man, they could just sell that as an appetizer and I would be there all the time.

I have been back for drinks several more times; often ordering the same exact appetizer feast. Maybe next time, I will actually go for dinner and try one their extraordinary sounding dinner entrees. Hope to see you there doing the same.

Customer Review: Highly recommended - this is an oustanding debut cd
I just got this cd a couple weeks ago, and it has been in heavy rotation ever since. Some songs are reminiscent of Dave Matthews or Bob Dylan, but he has his own style. My favorite songs are the funky title track, and "Carter's Tune" which is just amazing. The whole album has a countrified, rootsy feel, and sorta mellows out toward the end. The front end is funkier and jams out - it's a great way to start the day, but the second half is also the perfect late-night soundtrack before you go to bed. I highly recommend this cd to anyone who digs quality singer/songwriter music, and there's a sincere balance between sadness and optimism in his lyrics that's hard to find. That's right party people. If music is the food of love, then play on! Hyd knows how to party, and also knows its music. From lazy lounge to heart thumping electro techno, the DJs in clubs and pubs in Hyderabad spin it all. There's something for everyone. So if you're a music aficionado who knows the beat per minute of your favourite song, or just a regular party-hopper, you won't be disappointed.

But just to make it easier, we're giving you the lowdown on what type of music plays where; so you can pick and choose the party destination according to beats you want to swing to. Remember though, that a club may decide to play one or more of the genres below, so this is in no way a restrictive list. It's more of a guide to the popular joints in Hyd to dance to the different kinds of music we all love.

A- Alternative...Alternative Rock is not very groovy to dance to, so the only time you may hear bands like the Foo Fighters or Linkin Park play is if the place is playing Worldspace! But if you're really keen, pubs like 10 Downing Street (10 D) MAY just play some Alt rock, but ONLY during afternoons!

B- Bhangra...Bhangra has gone global and is a definite fixture in most club DJ sets. One can jump to Punjabi MC on Bollywood Nites in Bottles & Chimney (B &C), 10 D, Myst and sometimes even Ahala.

B-Bollywood...Get one thing straight. Bollywood remixes rock and we love them. So they're always going to be there. Almost every happening party will have some cool Bollywood remixes thrown in for some good ol' Desi flavor. Specialists are B&C and Ahala, especially on dedicated Bollywood nights.

C- Club...Club music is currently the rage of the Hyderabad night life. From sexy remixes of Justin Timberlake to hardcore Club legends like Benny Benassi, clubs such as Touch pump up the revelers with club tracks. Ahala is another cool place to check out some vibrant sounds.

D-Dance...Dance and Club are pretty similar, so the clubs that play the former would play Dance as well. Wednesday nights in Touch, Ahala, F Bar as well as other places such as Soul, Myst and Firangi Paani would be a good choice.

E-Electro...B&C and Liquids are known to play Techno every once in a while. But Electro is as popular as Dance/Club. Touch and Ahala also play Electro, but only a few electro tracks would be squeezed in, so don't count on a complete night of Electro!

H- Hip-hop...50 Cent, Kanye and other gangstas also make us jump, so the DJs in B&C, Firangi Paani and Ahala will play a good measure of some hip-hop to all you playas!

L - Lounge...Touch owns this genre. DJ Yogi will spin some cool lounge for all the party people every Saturday night, but it'll be during the beginning of the night. Later on, more energy is infused by playing primarily Club music. Ahala, Liquids (especially on Friday nights) and Sixth Element will also play some cool soothing Lounge music, ideal for an unwind session.

R- Rock... Rock can never die. So pubs like 10 Downing Street and Firangi Paani give you enough reason to drink another pint while the cool riffs of Pink Floyd, the Scorpions and Guns n Roses pipe through the speakers. Retro nights in 10 D are specially worth checking out, if you're a true "Rock star" at heart. Ahala and Touch will play remixes of rock tracks, but not pure rock as such.

This is an excellent edition of the collected poems of Octavio Paz, with English translations facing the Spanish originals. I purchased this as a gift for my Spanish teacher and she was delighted! My favorites are his poems written when he served as a Mexican diplomat in India and Japan. His sensitive mind absorbed the nuances of place and religion, which are recreated for us in the poems. His efforts at haiku en espagnol are enlightening, pun intended.

I bought this book after reading an excerpt of one of Paz's poems at a camp. I didn't know what poem it was from, so I bought the book and scoured it until I found the poem. It was Brotherhood. The poetry is beautiful and moving. It is the type of poetry you can read and enjoy no matter if you understand what it is saying, the writing is that beautiful

This is really an excellent text for use both in the classroom and on your own. This is a wonderful way to begin training muscles associated with articulation to pronounce different sounds required for singing in other languages. Moriarty provides an excellent foundation for beginning to learn the International Phonetic Alphabet. This is a great reference for IPA symbols and provides a clear, analytical way for forming, both in the brain and with articulators, pretty much any sound in the languages covered. This is a permanent reference in preparing for accurate performances in foreign languages.
