Learn How to Play the Guitar - Obstacles and Solutions

In recent years the addition of so many musical styles has emerged. Many people now want to learn how to play guitar. Unfortunately, most of these want-to-be guitar-players never make it past learning three chords. As a guitarists myself, I know the challenges of learning to play an instrument. I also know how to overcome most of these challenges. In this article I will be addressing a few challenges to learning how to play guitar and solutions for these challenges.

1. Learning to play guitar takes hard work.

The only place that success comes before hard work is in the dictionary. No matter how much God-given ability you have, you are not exempt from hard work. If you really want to learn how to play the guitar or any instrument for that matter, except for maybe the Kazoo, you must develop a habit of practicing. It takes the average person 21 days to develop a new habit. One thing that will help is to set aside a certain time everyday to practice and stick to this schedule even when you don't feel like it. Don't just plan on finding time to fit in a practice because it will never happen. You must schedule a 30 to 60 minute block of time each day. If you already have a full schedule, you may have to quit something else. It really just depends on how badly you desire to learn how to play and how much you are willing to sacrifice to accomplish this goal.

2. Learning to play guitar means sore fingers.

During the first few weeks of learning to play guitar, your fingers will be quite sore until you have developed calluses on your fingertips. This is an unavoidable reality of learning to play guitar and many people unfortunately quit due to soreness. The great news is that it's only temporary considering you are practicing regularly. The more you practice, the sooner your fingers will stop hurting.

3. Learning to play guitar requires playing songs you may not enjoy.

Most people want to learn guitar because they were inspired by someone or by some really cool riff. Unfortunately, most of the songs you love and desire to play are just out of your league in the beginning. You must first take the time to learn many basic fundamentals like chords, simple chord progressions and scales before you can tackle your favorite solos. Many people quit trying to learn guitar because they are so bored with the basics. Most worth-while endeavors in life will require the discipline necessary to endure the baby steps. One thing that will help you endure these baby steps is to keep the vision in front of you. Keep thinking about that really awesome riff that you will be able to play one day. Remember that you have to crawl before you can walk.

4. Learning guitar requires good teaching.

There are some good guitar instructors and some bad ones. Before spending your hard-earned money on just any person who claims that he or she can teach you to play guitar, check this person out. It's a good idea to ask for references. A good teacher should be able to provide these for you. Another option, and certainly a cheaper one, is to teach yourself via books and videos. Some of the best guitarists I know were self-taught. If you are a self-motivated type of person, I would highly recommend this latter option to you. There is a plethora of resources to help you learn how to play guitar.

Playing guitar is very fun and rewarding; however it will take hard work and patience. If you really desire to play, keep dreaming about playing your favorite song or riff and keep this vision in front of you. This goal will keep you motivated and determined on those days that you just don't feel like practicing. If you have been dreaming of playing the guitar, go for your dreams. There is no better time than the present.

Beijing Opera - History and Characters

The Beijing Opera, with its distinctive Chinese opera masks, is one of China's most recognizable cultural icons. Combining Music, Dance, Theatre, and Martial Arts, it has existed for over 200 years portraying Historical Events and Literature with beauty, style, and dynamic performance. It is most prominent in Beijing, but almost every Province in China has some form of Opera theatre. With its elaborate costuming, complex musical orchestrations and seemingly limitless Make-up and Mask designs, the Beijing Opera is seeing revitalization in popularity with both young and mature audiences.

What is now called the Beijing Opera originally came from a combination of several sources. In about 1790, four great theatre troupes from Anhui came to perform for the Royal Family. They brought arias and melodies called Xi Pi. Around 1828, performers from Hubei came to the same area and staged combined shows adding their local pieces of music called Er Huang. These performances were for the Royals but soon were to become more mainstream during Emperor Qianlong's reign as well as support from the notorious Empress Dowager Ci Xi. During this time, thousands of pieces of repertoire were developed covering the historical events, classic novels and stories of China as well as revisions of Western stories.

There are four basic categories of characters in the Beijing Opera style.

SHENG- The main Male actors in a performance. Either civil or military, there are several different aspects of training for the various lead male parts.

i. LAO SHENG- Senior Male roles, middle aged man with beard of black, grey or white. A soft or pleasant voice with dignity.

ii. XIAO SHENG- Junior male role or young man. No beard and a high sometimes shrill voice that may, on occasion, crack denoting immaturity and adolescence.

iii. WU SHENG- Acrobatic male roles or roles that require much activity. Military plays or civil plays that demand high standards of acrobatics. Performs the stylized martial arts fight scenes with sword or spear. Not usually trained as opera singer.

iv. WAWA SHENG- Kids and children roles. DAN- Female roles of several categories.

i. QING YI ( Ch'ing I)- Lady of good character. Quiet gentle disposition. Graceful flowing movements in "water sleeves" costume. Elegant but not vivid. Singing voice is high pitched.

ii. HUA DAN ( Hua Tan)- Flirtatious young girl role. Usually not as high a social standing as Qing

Yi. Coy and quick movements. A very difficult part to play. Attractive eye movements and continually changing facial expression. Vivid costume featuring handkerchief to flutter in her hand. Strong voice but more speaking than singing.

iii. GUI MEN DAN (Kuei Men Tan) - Young unmarried girl. This role may turn into Qing Yi or Hua Dan. Mischievous but not as much as Hua Dan. Immature reactions and movements.

iv. DAO MA DAN (Tao Ma Tan) - Female Warrior role. Trained for acting and singing but
performs highly skillful martial movements often with feathered headdress. Still a very feminine role. The now famous role of Disney's "MULAN" was based on Hua Mulan who disguised herself as a man to prevent her father from being conscripted into the military. She served for 12 years during the SouthNorth Dynasty and was decorated as a national hero.

v. WU DAN (Wu Tan) - Female Acrobatic roles. Steps in on any role that requires high acrobatic ability. Purely an acrobat but role can demand a talented actress to make for a successful performance.

vi. CAI DAN (Cai Tan) - Female Comedians. Serves to add relief to stressful scenes in serious plays. See also CHOU roles.

JING- Painted face male roles. These parts are known more for courage and resourcefulness than for scholarly intelligence. Often a high-ranking general or warrior/official. Jing actors are usually extroverts. A robust, sometimes gruff, bass voice. Full of swagger and self-assurance. There are many common color schemes associated with Jing roles but some of the more common are easily recognizable.

v Red- Good character and virtuous person.

v White- Treacherous and guile

v Green-Lack of self-control, rash, stubbornness

v Black- Brusque character

v Blue- Wild perhaps a Robber

v Gold/Silver- Used only for Gods and Spirits

The facial painting patterns also give information about a character. There are hundreds of patterns and designs for many situations and roles.

There are 3 main types of Jing roles:

i. DONG-CHUI- (T'ung Ch'uei) Also know as Hei Tou (Black Face) this role is a good singer and usually a loyal General

ii. JIA ZI- (Chia Tze) - A very good actor for more complicated characters.

iii. WU JING- Fighting and acrobatics. Seldom plays a prominent role.

CHOU- Comedy Roles. Dim but likable and amusing characters. Sometimes slightly wicked perhaps a rascal or a scholar/Prince who would not command much respect. There are two basic types of Chou roles:

i. WEN CHOU- Civilian roles.( Jailer, servant, merchant, scholar)

ii. WU CHOU- Minor Military roles but skilled in acrobatics

Of special mention should be the popular role of SUN WU KONG -The Monkey King.

This is a famous story of a Monks journey from China to India to collect scriptures to bring back to China... He is usually accompanied by a Pig for comedic effect, a not-so-learned monk to mediate the many quarrels and the Monkey King. This is played by a Wu Sheng actor. Known for the bent knees and an arms forward stance that imitate monkey movements. He has mastered Longevity, the 72 transformations of his physical body and can do somersaults in the clouds. Sun Wu Kong is followed by a troupe of monkeys who behave in the same manner but have individual personalities (greedy, naughty, sleepy, etc.). The Monkey King continues to be one of the most popular story lines in all of Chinese Opera Theatre.

The Opera Theatre form suffered during the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976) when all traditional pieces were banned. New versions became stories concerning "Class Struggle". The "Eight Model Plays" were a very popular theme, as were stories concerning Communist Activities, Anti-Japan sentiment, and the Civil War against Nationalists. The traditional stories were allowed to be shown in 1978 but by then they seemed out of date and the productions lacked historical and theatrical knowledge. Audiences lost to more contemporary forms of entertainment were hard to replace with the exception of those who were children when the Beijing Opera was at its peak. Many who lived through the Cultural Revolution preferred the newer versions and still favor those melodies.

Campaigns exist to bring back this lost art from as well as other Theatrical Arts. The Plum Blossom Award, sponsored by the Chinese Opera Journal, gives awards, judged by the Journal, to new artists. The actors and actresses must be under 45 years of age and come from all over China. These and other competitions are seen on the CCTV, China's main television network and radio stations, particularly during the New Years special concerts. There has even been designated a Beijing Opera Month.

In recent years, performances worldwide of Beijing Opera theatre have brought this marvelous art form to broader audiences. It has served as ambassador to the West providing many new opportunities for people to enjoy a performance style that rivals any of the Grand Operas and Symphonies of Europe and North America.

The Best of 2008 Heavy Metal Festivals

As the New Year is upon us, many travellers will be looking to book their holidays in order to get the best deals on trips intended for fun and sun; but for heavy metal fans now is the time to start booking travel to festivals in one of the most exciting years to be a heavy metal fan in recent memory. With so many festivals to pick from, this article picks the best of the bunch to make the decision as easy as possible.

Kicking off the year in truly evil style is the Inferno Metal Festival, held annually during Easter in Oslo, Norway. With this year's event taking place from 19-22 March, the current line-up includes such names as Satyricon, Cult of Luna, 1349 and Behemoth. Due to the extreme sound of most of the bands playing Inferno, it is unlikely the festival will ever grow to be as big as the more mainstream metal festivals, but like previous years, it is likely to attract travellers from across the globe in shared appreciation of all things extreme, and despite the brutality on stage, the festival has a friendly and inviting atmosphere.

Rock am Ring and Rock im Park are two concurrent festivals held annually in Germany, this year held between 6-8 June. Both festivals have the same line-up, Rock am Ring taking place in the west of Germany and Rock im Park taking place in the south-east, with artists rotating between the two sites over the course of the three-day event. Together Rock im Park and Rock am Ring forms the largest music festival in Germany and one of the largest in the world - last year had a combined attendance of 150,000. This year's line-up will include Rage Against the Machine, Motrhead, Bullet For My Valentine, The Hellacopters and Metallica.

In the UK, the biggest metal festival of the year is the Download Festival. Held at Donnington Park, the venue used for the Monsters of Rock Festivals between 1980 and 1996 and the 2002 UK Ozzfest, it is sacred ground to many headbangers around the world. This year's festival is scheduled for 13-15 June and the line-up is rumoured to include Metallica, Judas Priest, Muse, Kiss and Machine Head.

Wacken Open Air is the largest, exclusively metal music festival in the world, taking place annually in the small town of Wacken in Schleswig-Holstein, northern Germany. Since its humble beginnings in 1990 it has grown to become the major festival on the European metal calendar, attracting fans and bands from all over the world. This year it is set to take place from 31 July-2 August and the bands playing include As I Lay Dying, At the Gates, Children of Bodom, Iron Maiden, Killswitch Engage, Kreator and Nightwish.

Visitors wishing to travel to the festivals can take advantage of promotional flights throughout Europe, with most low-cost airlines currently offering their lowest prices for summer travel. While many assume that they have existing travel insurance that will cover most things, such as made available from their credit card, this type of cover tends to be rather basic and only covers accidents incurred during travel rather than after reaching final destination. Travelers should therefore compare credit cards to ensure theirs gives them the comprehensive cover required or take out additional insurance for the trip.

And finally, heavy metal fans are advised to invest in a pair of decent earplugs in order to block out nasty frequencies emanating from the amps and PAs at the festivals, ensuring their appreciation for heavy metal can be continued for years to come.

Playing the Guitar For Fun and Profit - Turning Fun Into Money

Have you ever wondered what to do with all of those guitar scales and guitar chords that you've been working so hard to master? The answer is simple. Turn your experience into income. In short, play the guitar for money. That's right, turn your hard work into good old fashioned dollars. Think of it this way, if you don't, someone else will.

The professional guitarist already knows how to make a good living by playing the guitar. Further, most top-end guitar players spent years and years playing local clubs and showcase houses before progressing on to higher paying Gigs. However, it's encouraging to know that, even the best had to pay their dues in the early years. Therefore, this article is dedicated to the guitarist who is attempting to find his/her way on the path to musical success. Generally, this is the intermediate player.

Right now, throughout the entire world, and in every city and in every country, there are thousands and thousands of guitarists wondering what to do with their developing talent. They've practiced some guitar chords, guitar scales, and have, most likely, learned a few songs on the guitar. In some cases, many have studied some music theory. These guitarists are ready to progress. But, to where and how? These questions, for many guitarists, are haunting until resolved.

Learning to play the guitar is difficult enough for many, let alone, reaching a good level of mechanical proficiency and then being confused as to what to do next. This confusion has shelved the careers of many potential guitarists. However, these days, there should be less confusion due to the vast amount of educational material available on the internet, etc. There is plenty of education to go around for everyone.

It's important to remember that playing the guitar should always be fun. Learning a new guitar chord should always be fun. In fact, everything that one does with the guitar should be fun (except breaking it). What then, is the answer to progressing into a paying situation as an intermediate guitarist? Let's examine some possibilities.

First, consider what type of playing scenario you desire. Are you a solo act? Do you prefer playing in a Duo? A Trio? Do you desire to be part of a full-blown band? Your decision is imparative in order to move forward in a timely manner. Remember, we're attempting to prepare for an income situation, not a friendly neighborhood jam. Therefore, how do you picture yourself as a working guitarist? Once you've answered this question, the rest is actually quite simple. Surround yourself with only those musicians that are of like-mind. In other words, associate and build your band or act around those who desire to make an income.

There are literally thousands of paying Gigs out there. One just needs to dig in and find them. Have a demo made of your band or yourself as a guitarist before you start searching. A good promotional package goes a long, long way. Don't leave home without one if you expect to have anyone take you seriously.

The truth of the matter is that, while there are thousands of guitar players (and musicians) that are capable of playing the guitar for their income, few will actually take the steps necessary to make it happen. Why? Lack of motivation is probably very high on the list of answers. Further, many just don't know how to get started. This is great news for those who are truly motivated to earn an income playing the guitar.

Potential paying Gigs include dance clubs, weddings, festivals, community events, church events, beach parties, commercial events, city sponsored events, fashion shows, high school dances, college dances, and many, many more. Networking is essential.

For the intermediate guitarist, there is a whole world waiting for you, that could prove quite prosperous. After all, why spend hundreds of hours learning guitar chords, guitar scales, songs, and music theory if you're not planning on actually making a living playing the guitar? Of course, the exception is the guitarist that is perfectly content playing simple songs around the campfire. This is great fun, and for some, this is as far as it goes. Once again, this is fine.

Looking back, I can honestly tell you that all of those years that I spent playing clubs throughout the United States and abroad, really paid off. Those years were preparation for larger stages, bigger venues, and larger audiences. Those years were the fun years, and very profitable. The trick is to plan your work and work your plan. Not everyone can do that. Once again, this is good news for you.

Every aspect of playing the guitar should be fun. No matter how successful one becomes, it's important to love your chosen profession. Weed out the individuals who are just there for the ride. Never waste time, because time waits for no man.

The next time you're practicing the guitar, playing songs, learning a new guitar chord or guitar scale, and wondering if there's a place for you, remember that there is. However, you'll have to take action. No one can sit around waiting for a result. A desired result can only be achieved with implementing the appropriate steps. So, get up, get busy, and get out there today. You'll be glad that you did.

For A GREAT Dance - Play The Hits!

It seems to me that too many bands spend way too much time playing what they want to hear, rather than what is right for the crowd at any particular moment. Whether this fact stems from rampant narcissism (Look at me!), an inability to read their crowd, or an extremely limited set list - the result is the same. Dancers tend to sit down when they don't know the tunes.

Conversely, some deejays and bands can't seem to make it through a single night without hauling out hoary old chestnuts like YMCA, New York New York, and The Macarena. While granting that there will always be a market - somewhere - for such tunes, these particular songs (along with Stairway To Heaven, Freebird, and anything from Mamma Mia!) run a very high risk of turning off a big chunk of your dancers. For that reason alone, they should be played sparingly (every February 29th, for example.) Alternate tunes - with a much lower "cheese" factor - exist which inspire many fewer cases of violence against music providers.

Even big-name performers can occasionally benefit from this same advice. I once sat through an entire Carlos Santana set without hearing a single tune I recognized (and I know a bunch). Now, you can add me to the list of former Santana fans.

But last night, the lovely Gina Tanner and I attended a concert performance by Gladys Knight. In a 90-minute set, Gladys perfectly balanced new songs and borrowed tunes (made famous by others) with all of her greatest hits. No matter how many times she has sung them, she knows that they are what makes the cash register ring.

Levon Helm and His Music - Hanging My Hopes on Dirt Farmer

Levon Helm has a new album. How had this monumental announcement managed to slip by me? A mom with kids dealing with all lots of time consuming duties such as myself doesn't have much time to pay attention to which direction the wind might be blowing in the industry. Nothing very interesting has happened in that area in quite a while, so why should I be paying attention? Then, just when I think there is no hope for change I'm blindsided with anticipation over this exciting bit of news.

I have very little time in my day for myself, but when I have a little downtime I find myself drifting towards the radio out of habit more than for any other reason. Too many times my disappointment far outweighs any satisfaction I get from those few moments of rolling the dial back and forth. There are good singers out there that occasionally churn out some catchy lyrics, but somehow most all of these artists just miss the boat when it comes to being real. Levon Helm is what I call real. He can take a mediocre song and make it real. Dirt Farmer, with his daughter Amy, should be a real treat as that apple does not appear to have fallen far from the tree.

Anybody who can listen to him sing The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down and make it through without tears rolling off their chin or without the feeling that their heart's swelling so big that it threatens to cut off their wind just can't be human. I don't see how a rush of just pure feeling could escape anybody from the north or south when they have the privilege of hearing him sing that tune. Songs about such tragedy don't usually bring on feelings of pure joy but it's not the words of this song that are so moving. It's Levon's soul wrenching delivery that has made me play that song as many as ten times in a row back to back.

I've heard it said that Levon's voice is an acquired taste. If that's the case, I was born an addict. I was hooked with the first verse I ever heard him sing. I can't explain the exact effect of his music and I would be at a complete loss to try. It brings me some comfort to know that I'm not the only fan that has trouble defining Levon's unique gift. All the usual terms to describe singers, songs or most any musical piece fail miserably. A mutual friend of ours said he sounded "grouchy" in the most complimentary way. I don't think that grouchy would have been a term that I would have used, but I knew exactly what Frank meant. He was trying to come up with a more original way to say how great Levon makes every piece of music that he chooses to touch and no doubt improve with his magnificent gift.

ballroom dance music

Ballroom Dancing - A Brief History

When you think of Ballroom dancing, you generally think of flowing gowns and dark tuxedos. You also think of beautiful, willowy, women and tall, dark, handsome men waltzing their way around the dance floor. However, ballroom dance is not just the Waltz, it is a lot more. From the elegant and stately waltz, a hot, sultry and sexy Tango or Paso Doble, or a good bit of lively fun like the Fox Trot, Jive or Quick Step, ballroom dancing is all of these.

Technically, ballroom dancing is defined as "Any of various, usually social dances in which couples perform set moves". However, the word "ball" (not the child's toy) comes from the Latin "ballare" meaning to dance and forms the base for the word ballroom (a room for dancing), ballet (a dance), and ballerina (a dancer).

Ballroom dancing was very popular among the gentry (or upper class) of England, in the late 18th and early 19th centuries and didn't really catch on with the working class until the late 19th and early 20th century.

It wasn't until the early 1920's that competitive ballroom dancing began gaining popularity. As a result, the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (formerly known as The Imperial Society of Dance Teachers) formed a Ballroom Branch whose function was to standardize the ballroom dances.

Today, modern ballroom dancing revolves around five dances comprising: the Modern Waltz; the Viennese Waltz; the Slow Foxtrot; Tango; and the Quickstep.

Latin American ballroom is short for Latin and American - not a reference to Latin countries and its dances are the Samba; Rumba; Paso Doble; Cha-Cha; and the Jive.

The modern ballroom dances all involve a couple dancing in a closed hold and vary in tempo (beats per minute) and rhythm (structure). A closed hold involves 5 bodily points of contact between the couple. Three of these points involve the hands, the males left hand holding the females right, the females left hand on top of the males right upper arm (for the Tango the females hand would go behind his arm) and the males right hand on the females back resting on her left shoulder blade. The other two points of contact are the females left elbow resting on the males right elbow and the right side of the females chest touching the right side of the males chest. This dance posture provides a very elegant look as the couple floats across the dance floor and has its origins in the European royal courts.

There is some conjecture that the right side-to-right side contact of the closed hold may have originated from a time when men danced while wearing their swords, which were hung on their left sides. Additionally, this theory would also explain the counter clockwise movement around the dance floor as the man would've stood on the inside of the circle so he wouldn't inadvertently hit any of the people watching the dancers with his sword as he danced past.

The dancing posture for Latin American ballroom varies from dance to dance with some dances using the closed hold and others where the partners hold each other with only one hand.

Both Modern Ballroom and Latin American Ballroom has been standardized for teaching purposes and has a set, internationally recognized vocabulary, technique, rhythm and tempo.

Is It A Sport, Is It A Plane, No It's Roller Hockey

Roller Hockey

The sport of hockey has many variations, including the Olympic sports of ice hockey and field hockey. Roller Hockey however, has also gained in popularity, as a recreational activity and as a competitive sport. It is an extremely fast sport, exciting for spectators to watch, and demanding a lot of skill.

There are two distinct disciplines within the sport, with their own equipment and rules. The original Roller Hockey is played, using traditional quad roller skates. When inline skates were invented, the new Inline Hockey evolved. Both sports are played in many countries but the US and Canada favor Inline Hockey. The different choice of skates results in a different skating style. There is more intricate footwork in Quad Hockey and it is easier for the players to maneuver. Inline Hockey contains more racing around and is similar to Ice Hockey action.

The goalies differ in that they use different gloves for each sport. Inline Hockey goalies use a catch glove, whereas Quad Hockey goalies block shots with a batting glove. Each of the Roller Hockey teams are made up of four skaters and a goalie. Inline Hockey, also known as Street Hockey, is played over two, 20 minute periods. Quad Hockey, sometimes referred to as Hardball Hockey, is played for an extra five minutes in each period.

Every sport wants Olympic status and Quad Hockey was a demonstration sport at the Summer Olympics in Barcelona in 1992. Many World Championships have taken place, with the Latin countries dominating. Portugal is the most successful country, winning 15 Quad Championships. Inline Hockey World Championships are rather more complicated as there are two different events each year. One is organized by the International Roller Sports Federation and the other is run by the International Ice Hockey Federation. The United States and Canada are the traditional leaders in the sport but Inline Hockey is becoming more popular across Europe and Latin America.

Women have come to the sport too, becoming increasingly organized. Both Roller Hockey disciplines have structured competitions. Inline Hockey has had Women's World Championships since 2002 and women have competed on the world stage in Quad Hockey, since 1992. Again, the Quad Championships are dominated by Latin countries. Roller Hockey started as an amateur pastime, played on the streets and local rinks. Ice Hockey may still be the leading stick and puck sport, but the other versions are keen to catch up. Countries without a tradition of playing sport on ice have welcomed this type of hockey too.

Ian Botham (no relation) runs his own online sports goods mail order business as well as several sports related websites. If you need to look for some hockey equipment then check out this greatHockey Accessories site.

How To Make Your Wedding Music Rock

Your wedding is one of the most significant days of your life, and as such, you want everything, from the moment you awaken to the honeymoon, to be perfection so you have great memories. Naturally, the reception also included, and this means you will want to take precautions in choosing the music for your wedding reception.

Ensuring that you have great music for your wedding reception means a lot more then just finding a guy who can play "The Chicken Dance" at some point during the evening. Choosing a good provider for the music at your wedding reception can set the tone for the whole evening and create more memories of your special day, whether good or bad. Knowing how to choose your wedding entertainment will increase your chance that those memories are good ones.

Ensure There's Music

It seems silly to state the obvious, but ensure that the person providing the music at your wedding reception has a wide range of music; you don't want to attend your reception and find that the selection of wedding music is limited to a handful of awful ballads that no one seems to like. A wide range of music in your provider's collection means that requests at the reception can be handled. If you'd like to hear a special song while at your reception, ensure that the person providing the music at your wedding reception can play it.

And while you talk with your provider about the music, ascertain that he will have all the equipment to play it. You don't want to host your wedding at your local community center only to find that the most your music provider has brought is his stereo system from home.

Ensure it Flows

Be sure to discuss with your provider before and how the music will fit accordingly with the tone of your reception. If you intend for the happy couple's special song to be played after the cutting of the cake, be sure to tell your music provider. It will seem awkward if the music at your wedding reception isn't played at the appropriate times. Don't hesitate to ask the person providing music at your wedding reception for advice on music to choose or timing for particular songs. If you've picked an experienced provider of wedding reception music, you will have a great source of advice about what has and hasn't worked for other wedding receptions.

And on the subject of finding an experienced provider, be sure to obtain references and make a point to check them. You don't want to discover on the day of your wedding that your DJ tends to hit the open bar more often then he hits the record table. With care and some planning beforehand, though, you'll have a selection of wonderful music along with your wonderful wedding.

Treatment For Fibromyalgia

The word fibromyalgia comes from the Latin term for fibrous tissue (fibro-) and the Greek ones for muscle (-myo-) and pain (-algia). It is also known as fibrositis. It is a syndrome characterized by chronic pain, stiffness, and tenderness of muscles, tendons, and joints without detectable inflammation.Fibromyalgia does not cause body damage or deformity. However, undue fatigue plagues the large majority of patients with fibromyalgia and

Fibromyalgia is considered an arthritis-related condition. However, it is not a form of arthritis (a disease of the joints) since it does not cause inflammation in the joints, muscles, or other tissues or damage them. But fibromyalgia can (like arthritis) cause significant pain and fatigue and it can similarly interfere with a person's ability to carry on daily activities.

Irritable bowel syndrome may occur with fibromyalgia.Other symptoms of fibromyalgia may include headaches, painful menstrual periods, numbness or tingling of the extremities, restless legs, temperature sensitivity, and cognitive and memory problems (sometimes referred to as "brain fog").

Fibromyalgia tends to affect women. Only 10 to 20% of people with fibromyalgia are men. The diagnosis of fibromylgia in both women and men is usually made during middle age, although the symptoms may be present earlier in life. People with certain rheumatic diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus (lupus), or ankylosing spondylitis (spinal arthritis) are more likely to also have fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia is not always easy to diagnose because many of the symptoms mimic those of other disorders, there are no visible signs of the disorder that a physician can see and there is no definitive laboratory test for fibromyalgia. The diagnosis of fibromyalgia is a clinical diagnosis. It is based on a history of chronic widespread pain that persists for more than 3 months in combination with tenderness in at least 11 of 18 specific tender point sites. Treatment is most effective when it incorporates combinations of education, stress reduction, exercise, and medication. A study has shown that aerobic exercise, such as swimming and walking, improves muscle fitness and reduces muscle pain and tenderness. Heat and massage may also give short-term relief. Patients with fibromyalgia may benefit from a combination of exercise, medication, physical therapy, and relaxation. Recommendations for prevention and treatment

1.Obtain delayed food IgG allergy testing, such as that available at New Hope Medical Center. This requires fasting for 12 hours prior to a blood draw.148 food antigens are tested against the patient's blood. Reactions are viewed under a microscope and recorded by digital camera. The patient is then given a consultation, along with an instruction manual, on how to correct this situation. If the patient's blood is too reactive, then a few intravenous infusions may become necessary prior to the blood draw in order to reduce this hyperactive state and obtain a more accurate test result.

2.Avoid processed foods (e.g., as white flour), refined foods (e.g., as white sugar), and stimulants such as coffee, tea, and tobacco (See "Smoking Addiction") as these can all depress your immune system.

3. Make an effort to increase your consumption of water.Attempt to drink eight glasses of purified or reverse osmosis water daily.

4. Ensure that your bowels move at least once daily by increasing your fiber consumption in the form of fresh fruits and vegetables. Oat bran and psyllium husk are also good sources of fiber. Coffee enemas can be very helpful here, as well as for stimulating liver detoxification via bile production.(See "Constipation")

5. Check your thyroid function by measuring your basal body temperature. This is done by placing a thermometer under your arm for 10 minutes before arising from bed on two consecutive days. For menstruating women, this is best done at the beginning of the menstrual cycle. The average basal body temperature should be greater than 97.8 degrees. If not, a trial of natural thyroid should be considered. (See "Hypothyroidism").

6. Consider a course of Cortef with a Micro dose Protocol.Cortef is a weak, water soluble steroid that helps to raise the body's threshold of pain by raising its natural cortisol level. It is given in a gradually decreasing amount over 2-3 weeks after which the patient may be placed on "booster doses" 4-5 days each week as needed for pain. This is a great way to interrupt the cycle of chronic pain and without the side-effects of Prednisone.

7.Consider an evaluation for free radical damage from environmental pollutants such as lead, aluminum, cadmium, and mercury. If elevated, heavy metal detoxification therapy is indicated. (See "Chelation Therapy").

8.Supplement with antioxidants such as vitamins A, C, E, Bioflavonoid, and Coenzyme Q10, B-vitamins, magnesium, free-form amino acids, thymus gland, and acidophilus. Consider also using Proteolytic enzymes, DMG, and vitamin B12 injections. Chlorophyll in tablet or liquid (such as barley or wheat grass) is also helpful.

9.Herbal preparations from burdock root, dandelion, echinacea, goldenseal and pau d'arco all promote healing. These can be made in teas and combined or alternated daily.

10.Homeopathic nosode preparations, such as those made from viruses themselves, are particularly helpful. However, these must be obtained by prescription from a homeopathic physician.Other homeopathic remedies known to be helpful in fatigue include Carbo Vegetabilis, Cocculus, Ferrum Phosphoricum, and Phosphoric Acidum.Combination remedies can also be helpful, especially if they contain the substance (e.g, virus) identified as the possible source of infection and/or fatigue. Isode therapy (e.g., preparations made from the patient themselves) can also be very beneficial here.

11.Take sublingual fermented lactobacillus three times daily for immune stimulation.

12.Gentle skin detoxification through a medical spa with steam sauna, infrared sauna, and/or contrast shower.

13.In severe cases, get intravenous solutions for better and more complete response. There should include either vitamin C or amino acids or combinations of both.

14.Intramuscular injections can be helpful for the delivery of energy medicines (e.g., B5, B12, AMP, NADH). These can be given 1-2 times weekly.

15.Subcutaneous energy injections can be administered daily and can include not only some of the products mentioned in #12 above, but homeopathic preparations as well.

Free Music Marketing

Even if you're sleeping on your buddy's couch, you CAN promote your band with little or no money. (You will need a computer and internet access)

#1. Get an Email Account. Free email accounts are available from Gmail, Hotmail or a lot of other web-based email companies. Simply go to their homepage and sign up for an account, and you'll be up and going in minutes.

#2. Get a MySpace Page. You can get the band a MySpace site for free. There you can also load up some of your songs, photos, etc. Once you have your site up email all your friends and fans to come check it out and add them to your friend list. You can then contact them all at once to announce future gigs, song releases, etc.

#3. Get Something to Sell. You can't make any money if you don't have anything to sell. When you're playing gigs, even free ones can make you money by selling stuff to the audience. Make sure you have copies of your music on CD or a flash drive to sell. You can also sell merchandise with your band's name and logo on it. You can do this online for free by setting up a virtual storefront at CafPress.com. They'll give you a little store front site and shore how your logo looks on multiple items you select. Once someone buys the stuff, they handle all the billing and shipping and send you a check.

#4. Get a Sponsor. No, not an AA sponsor! I mean a corporate sponsor who will give your band money to promote their company. Start off by looking for "Angel" sponsors. These could be parents, grandparents or friends of the family who have a little extra money to invest in your career. Then look to companies who would benefit from advertising to the audience you will be playing to. Auto dealers, clothing stores, soft drink or beer distributors, are also a good prospects. Show them that their money will be going directly into the creation of the marketing materials, and not the band beer fund! For example, you put their logo with yours on T-shirts, flyers, posters, banners, etc., in exchange for them paying for the cost of creating those pieces.

#5. Alert The Media. Contact local radio and TV station and offer to play any on or off air events or parties they are having. You may or may not get paid this time, but having your name on the minds and lips of the local movers and shakers can only help your career.

The Art Of Auditioning

I was reading an article on job interviewing skills. The author said a lot about first impressions, and that in just 4 seconds, a job applicant is sized up with regard to:

  • appearance,
  • intelligence,
  • poise,
  • ability to exude confidence and
  • willingness to contribute to a team effort.

So I started wondering about how those qualities might "fit" into an audition scenario.

In a job interview, the applicant may be given ample opportunity to demonstrate his talent and his potential asset to the company for which he/she is interviewing. The interview itself may be quite lengthy, cordial, friendly, even if the interviewer is not necessarily impressed and ends up tossing the resume into the trash once the applicant has left the office. All very civilized!

An audition, while containing some of the elements of a job interview, is very different! You get out onto the stage, you begin to sing, and in seconds, not minutes, the loud, bombastic sounds of THANK YOU! (pause) "NEXT?" come barreling up to the stage, stinging your ears and your pride as you slither away off the stage and out the door.

So what are the elements of a good audition? Upon listening to literally thousands of auditions, I have come up with what I believe to be the 4 basic essential elements:

Talent - Confidence - Musicianship - Authenticity

Let's take them one at a time.

TALENT

Naturally, if talent is not present and immediately recognized, the audition is a total bust and is terminated instantly! Let's assume that you do have talent and that it's sufficient to warrant this audition.

How do you SHOW your talent in the first 4 seconds?

1.Choose a song that you know blind. In other words, one that you are so sure of that you never have to worry about forgetting a lyric or whether or not you'll hit that high note.

2. Choose a song that you LOVE! It's so much easier to enjoy yourself when you sing a song you simply adore, and enjoying yourself is part of the "first impression" the judges are evaluating.

3. Choose a song that instantaneously demonstrates your range and vocal quality...even if you have to start in the middle of the song.

4.Let the song express YOU and nobody else, (in other words, do NOT imitate anyone).

CONFIDENCE

If you have prepared sufficiently, you should be able to exude confidence in spite of being nervous. Take a deep belly breath before stepping onto the stage and tell yourself that you are wonderful and will do great!
Lack of confidence is easy to recognize almost immediately, so the preparation, that is, learning your words and making them your own is vital! Those of us who hold auditions regularly are fully aware of the "butterflies" syndrome and will make allowances for a performer IF the singer has obviously taken the time to prepare his/her performance. Don't posture! Just Be yourself!

MUSICIANSHIP

As is the case with "American Idol", many auditions are held "a cappella", which is without a musical accompaniment. If you cannot hold the tune without hearing it played for you, then please...DON'T AUDITION! Get some ear training before you embarrass yourself by not being able to stay on pitch.

AUTHENTICITY

A genuine inner quality that shines through a performance gets immediate attention. I don't know how many auditions I have listened to where the singer was obviously trying to impress me rather than just being REAL. An artificial performance can really turn me off...where every note and body movement is so meticulously choreographed that there is no connection to the lyrics and a total absence of spontaneity and vitality in the performance.

One of the things I emphasize heavily and regularly in my practice is the need for a singer to truly KNOW who he/she is in order to demonstrate genuineness to an audience.

It takes courage to be YOU, but that is why we perform: to be who we are, warts and all, through our music. And it is this quality that most will instantly CONNECT with the one listening, whether it be a director, producer, or someone in the audience.

Notice, I did not mention having an excellent voice as one of the key elements. That is because if your voice is not up to par, you should hold off participating in auditions until your voice is further developed.

I wonder about those singers who tried our for "American Idol" last fall, who were totally humiliated and made fun of, first by the judges, and then by the network producers, who continued to air the most awful auditions weeks into the season. Why on earth would a person put him/herself through that? Get your voice into shape before you audition - for anything!

Finally, although it may appear to some folks at times that in America, we as a culture seem to celebrate mediocrity, for those of us who see art as the salvation of humanity, the only thing that can cut through the cynicism and go straight to the heart, performing a song is not just a way to get one's 15 minutes of fame on TV. Being an artist is a personal responsibility...to uplift, inspire, and cause an otherwise cynical fellow to stand up and say, "WOW...that moved me!"
