Guitar and Rock music are inseparable and probably one of the main reasons for this is that most rock numbers or compositions have short or prolonger lead guitar solos. The lead guitar solos can be mastered by using different scales and guitar improvisation techniques like hybrid picking and legato technique.

There is such a huge variety of guitar improvisation techniques available that you can practice solos all your life and yet not find the end. It is infinite! One such guitar improvisation technique is called hybrid picking. Hybrid picking can add an absolutely new dimension to the sound that is rendered by your lead guitar. This is a type of guitar improvisation technique that is most commonly used by guitarists in music genres or styles like blues, rock, country, bluegrass, and even jazz. One of guitar legends who has used hybrid picking very effectively is Stevie Ray Vaughan. He used it for rendering a solo in Lenny Here's a small exercise in hybrid picking that you can try:

Hybrid picking is a guitar improvisation technique where you pick the guitar strings or chords using the fingers as well as the pick at the same time. The advantage is that you will be able to use your plectrum to play lead guitar that normally requires the fingerstyle mode of playing.

You will also be able to make wide string leaps like you can leap from the 5th string right to the 1st string, which can be quite a difficult exercise otherwise. To effectively use the hybrid picking guitar improvisation technique, you will need to your pick between your forefinger and thumb.

Legato Technique

The legato technique is another effective guitar improvisation technique that renders slurred notes quite similar to the notes rendered through hammer-on's and pull-offs. Here is a small exercise that includes some kick ass legato licks:

Legato guitar improvisation technique has been effectively used for solo performance by the likes of Joe Satriani, Alan Holdsworth, and Steve Vai. The above notes that form the legato technique will require you to hammer the notes without picking. You should ideally play this at 60bpm.

    How many times have you been driving in your car listening to the radio or hanging out at home playing your favorite cd's and a song comes on and all of a sudden as if you were in a time machine, you find yourself in the past walking on a very familiar beach with a girl you were once deeply in love with or you were at home listening to your stereo and your mom comes in and tells you how proud she is of you.

    It does not have to be music that makes you reminisce and it does not necessarily have to be only good news that you remember. One of the most tragic days in my life is brought vividly back to life every time I watch an old black and white movie. The movie is "The Maltese Falcon" starring the great actor Humphrey Bogart. It was on November 22, 1963 at 1:30 P.M. EST when my tragedy occurred. I happened to be home from school with the flu watching "The Maltese Falcon" when the movie was interrupted by a special news report: President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in while riding in a presidential motorcade in Dallas, Texas. Now, whenever I watch "The Maltese Falcon", it brings back all of the different emotions that I felt on that tragic day as if I was lying on the sofa watching TV back in 1963.

    Music and Movie Posters Are Catalysts To Memories

    Much like music and movies, movie posters and music posters can trigger past memories also. There have been times when I have seen music posters of musical artists or bands that sang songs that would bring back memories for me. The same can be said about movie posters. I have seen movie posters that would play a rerun of the movie in my head which in turn would trigger a fond, unhappy or bittersweet memory. So, you do not necessarily have to actually hear a song or watch a movie to bring about memories.     I think this is a great starter album for those who may not have heard Paloma San Basilio. She has a wonderful voice, and can sing anything from dance to sultry formats.


    Good exercise music has a way of putting us into a rhythm where we tend to forget about time. If you have carefully

    selected your workout music you will find yourself looking forward to your workout. Music has a way of stimulating us physically and emotionally. This stimulation can be perfect motivation to help you with your workout.

    But..

    If you just listen to just anything it may be a little difficult to reap the full benefits of what the
    right music can do for your workout so that is why you need to listen to some music with some beats that keep an even count, so you probably don't want to listen to Ina-Gadda-Da-Vida By: Iron Butterfly or for you younger kids Hey Mama by: the Black Eyed Peas. Just because the rhythm is not even and steady to keep and even repetition pace. Besides when you get home their will be plenty of time to practice your harlem shake but for now you need to grow.

    What is the best workout music? a specific exercise mix. You can purchase music to exercise to relatively inexpensively.

    A good exercise mix will maintain steady beats while the original recording may slow or quicken at times that will disturb the flow of your workout. Once you get a good feel for what it sounds like, you could probably go about downloading your own C.D. of your choice.

    I know not listening to the music that you download might be a pain because you like the music you have, obviously you want to listen to it! I tried it out for a while and listened to a friends and it worked so well I just downloaded songs that sounded close to the songs that I heard. It ended up working out well I had more energy and I stayed and worked out longer and did not rush through my exercise.

    This is a helpful tip that I know has worked for people in the past. Steady techno, beats that can keep you more focused and in rhythm with your workout. Now most guys do not want to listen to techno because you are afraid your buddy 's going to catch you and ask if you want to glow stick dance. This is a good thing to at least try out if you embrace it oddly enough it works.

    The emergence of hip-hop in the early 70's produced four elements, which continue to be mainstays of the genre: disc jockeying or a DJ, break dancing, emceeing or an MC, and graffiti art. How prominent are these elements today and how were they represented during BET's first annual hip-hop awards in Atlanta? Upon acceptance of the "I Am Hip-Hop Icon Award," rap pioneer, Grandmaster Flash paid homage to a host of DJs. According to Flash, DJ's were once the gatekeepers between the record labels and the streets. In 1996, thriving regional radio stations that reflected a community's heart and soul were replaced by media conglomerates with syndicated play lists. Followed by a myriad of changes in music distribution and leadership at radio stations and record labels, the fire that fueled hip-hop's reputation began to fade. To maintain integrity, Flash encouraged a shifting to the way things use to be--where new music was received and circulated by the DJs. Knowing that DJs spend all of their time in tune with the streets via clubs and parties, Flash commented, "It makes sense that [DJs] break a record." Flash also admonished MCs to allow DJs to perform on stage. "The template was designed for DJs to play a part," he said.     What can I say I LOVE THIS CD! But whats so good about it well number 1 I love the lead singers voice (Jose Guadalupe). To me he has a voice to kill for but thats just my opinion you might think diferently. But as far as i'm concerned i think this is a super album to buy cause every song on here is so good my personal favorite well... it would have to be number 3 (Aqui No Mas.) I just love that song I can not explain the feeling I get when I hear this song it makes me feel so good inside not to metion like I want to dance. but the song (Espinas) is good to hey there all good thats why I think you should buy this cd you will love it if you like banda musica like I do. Look i'm going to be honest with you I would never tell someone to buy a cd I never herd or thought was not a good cd to buy thats how I am but everybody has different taste in musica so u may like it may not but I know I love it and i'm so glad i bought it I would never get rid of it. Even though it is an old album of theres I still listen to it to this day thats how much I love this cd it was one of the best investments i ever made.     A single snowflake glistens and swirls past a row of crystaline icicles then lands gently on a blanket of lovely white powder. The air is warm and dry in my cozy music room as I sip rich hot chocolate and sigh at the calm beauty outside my window.

    Ahhh, Canada in Winter.

    TWANG! Fizzzle. SPROING!! Snap. Thud.

    My violin, resting on my desk, is exploding! A peg slips, the D-string unwinds. The other three pegs follow suit thus all four strings sag pathetically. The sudden lack of tension simultaneously causes the bridge to fall off to the floor and the sound post to collapse inside the instrument. In only an instant my violin went from an expensive piece of art to an expensive train wreck.

    (Expletives courteously deleted for your reading enjoyment).

    Suffice to say, Winter's not so pretty anymore for this violinist.

    When the temperature drops to below freezing, as it inevitably does in Canada each winter, there is zero moisture content, or humidity, in the air. This extreme lack of humidity, which is responsible for chapped lips and unmanagable, frizzy hair, also causes wood to dry out. This is all fine and dandy if you're curing firewood for a romantic blaze by the fireplace, but it's murder on violins.

    As violins are made almost entirely of wood they are very susceptible to dry air. This is because wood is full of tiny pod-shaped pockets which serve the purpose of storing water for the living tree. As the cut wood ages, it naturally dries and shrinks. Older violins which have had time to dry out or new violins made with old, cured wood do sound better because these pockets are not dense with water but now dried out and the dry spaces create a more resonant tone.

    The problem arises when there are sudden changes in humidity. As the air dries rapidly, the tiny moisture pockets are emptied of water, causing the wood to shrink a tiny bit. But when it becomes suddenly dry the wood shrinks so rapidly as to cause potential damage to the instrument.

    Exploding Fiddles

    The classic violinist's winter dilemma of the instrument seemingly "exploding" apart. This is caused when the wooden pegs which hold the strings shrink and become loose inside their wooden hole, which has also shrunk away from the peg. The enormous amount of tension the strings pulling at the loose peg in a bigger hole causes the peg to spin, instantly unwinding the string until it has no tension.

    As one string loosens, the pressure has become higher on the remaining three strings. These then loosen and unwind under the sudden increase in pressure. Soon enough all strings have become floppy and the bridge and soundpost, without any pressure to hold them in place, will fall. Sometimes the pegs will even fall out of the peg box or shoot across the room from the quick unwinding.

    This is the violinist's cue to swear loudly.

    Even more horrifying yet is when the violin's top plate, or belly, shrinks too far inward yet the saddle, or piece of wood inlayed inside it and against the grain, does not give. The shrinking wood will strain under the pressure and a grain crack can occur. This "saddle crack" can spread as far as your soundpost, which can affect your instrument's tone. They can be repaired, naturally, but it's not cheap and may affect the value of the instrument. Of course a violinist's first course of action is to shout a few crude words.

    It's never a pretty site to open your violin case to find it stringless with a post rattling loose inside the instrument, but thankfully you can avoid it. Start by keeping your violin warm. Take your violin into the supermarket rather than leave it in the trunk of your vehicle, even if only for an hour. Wrapping your instrument in a scarf or covering it with a case blanket adds an extra layer of insulation and also helps keep it protected. Even better is to purchase a case cover or a good quality case with extra padding or insulation.

    Dry Wood

    Then comes the issue of dryness. Players with older violins, violins with cracks or instruments with more likeliness to crack are encouraged to use a violin humidifier. The best kind is the type which inserts into the violin's f-hole. Referred to as a "Dampit," the device is simply a long sponge inside a rubber tube. The moisture is slowly released into the body of the violin and keeps the air moist but not wet.

    A drawback to the dampit is that the player must remember to re-wet it every couple of days or so to be effective. Most Guarneri-style violins' f-holes are too narrow to accommodate the tubes, so this solution is limited to Strad copies and other instruments with a larger opening. It also does not keep the pegs from slipping while you play, but is effective in protecting the entire instrument while in storage.

    Humidifiers which stay in a case are a good idea for players who are keeping the instrument in storage. The drawback to these is the moment you open the case you have released the moisture. As it is, the best place to keep a violin during winter is in the case unless your home is temperature and humidity controlled.

    The poor-man's case humidifier is an apple or potato slice wrapped loosely in a sandwich bag and kept in the case. (Just change it every so often so it doesn't rot and stink up your fiddle...)

    Resist the temptation to run out and purchase a huge room humidifier for your fiddle. I've seen violin collectors over-do it and the violins have become swollen and nearly moldy with extra moisture. A couple house plants (spider plants are great) create enough moisture in a room to it ideal for a violin and are just a good idea for air quality in general.

    As for heat sources, try not to leave your violin in a room with a wood stove or fireplace. Heat sources will speed up the drying and are bad for varnish as well. Most players leave their violin in the bedroom where temperature is more likely to remain constant 24-hours a day.

    If your pegs continue to slip there are a few final things to consider. Perhaps they need to be wedged further into the pegbox during cold months and pulled out a tad during the rainy season when the wood expands. Some pegs need a little extra help with "peg dope." (Really, I'm not making this stuff up). "Peg dope" is a compound which holds a grip and stops slippage in pegs. Ground up rosin powder around the pegs does the trick for some old-time fiddlers, but is sticky and not great in the long term.

    When all else fails your violin may need the help of a luthier. If your pegs are misshapen they will not stay fixed in the pegbox and will need to be properly fitted. Older violins' pegbox holes can be ground until they are too large to fit the pegs snugly and would have to be re-bushed, or carefully filled in and re-drilled. Re-bushing is expensive, so pray a bit of peg dope will do the trick.

    With some planning you can avoid the worst-case scenario of a cracked violin or one which has come apart due to pegs slipping. Unfortunately everyone seems to have to tune their violins more often in winter. It's just a part of life. Just take your time when you tune your instrument using the pegs as over tightening the pegs is the number one cause of string breaks.

    Broken Strings

    I can always tell when there's a big change in temperature by how many E-strings I sell in a week! The more strings go out of tune, the more likelihood they will be broken by inexperienced players. Invest in an electronic chromatic tuner and pay attention to the pitch by strumming the string as you tighten it. As long as you don't go above pitch your strings will last all year long.

    And remember, even the worst damage to a violin can be fixed. Even the aforementioned predicament is easily overcome by a trip to the violin doctor to reset the soundpost and isn't the end of the world (just a pain in the butt).     After you learn chord charts it will be a lot easier for you to understand scale charts, however it is not essential that you know how to read a chord chart to learn to use scale charts. The main difference is that a scale chart has more notes per string and the notes on the chart are not played all at once like a chord.

    Scales

    The easiest scale to play would be the chromatic scale. Some consider the chromatic scale more of an exercise than a real scale but it is important to know because it contains all the possible notes of the guitar. The next scales you will learn are the major and minor scales. Both the major and minor scales have 8 notes in them before they start to repeat the pattern. Another great thing about scales on the guitar is that all the scale types have the same pattern. That means once you know one major scale you know all 12, or once you know one minor scale you know all 12.

    Scale Charts

    Scale charts are very similar looking to chord charts. At the top there is the name of the scale, such as A Major or B Minor. Below that there is the same grid as a chord chart. This grid represents the neck of the guitar. Vertical lines show the strings from left to right, E, A, D, G, B, e. The horizontal lines show the frets of the guitar with the top line being closest to the nut of the guitar. The black dots show what notes are in the scale. Like a chord chart the black dots show where to put your fingers. But since most people don't have 8 or 16 finger you have to play one note at a time starting with the root note or the note on the E string (far left line) on top of the other note of that string. This is the lowest tone of the scale.

    The root note of the scale is the note that is used to name the scale. If the scale starts on an A note and follows the major scale pattern after that then it is the A major scale. The root note can also be used to show where the scale pattern repeats if more than one octave is being played. The root note on a scale chart is usually shown by an outlined circle or a circle with an R in the middle. Think of the root note as the starting note of the scale.

    After you learn the major and minor scale patterns you can play any of the 12 scales of that scale type. Just take the major scale, say C major, and move each note up one fret, now you have the Db major scale. You can do this with all of the scale on the guitar, but be careful when you get to playing the open strings near the nut of the guitar, make sure you are playing the correct scale pattern because they can change when you start adding in open strings.
